I purchased this for shooting hockey games. The suction cups will not hold onto the cold glass and was a real great disappointment. Normal temps it works fine.... I would say save your money and purchase a rubber lens hood. Overpriced from my point of view.
I also use the lens skirt. Works like a charm. I use it to photograph my tropical fish in their aquaria among other things.

I have this lens and love it. It's my go to on wildlife shoots. Never had a problem with Nikon service.

No lens with that long a zoom scale is tops in IQ, and what about night or low light situations? It isn't a speed demon either.
I would say take a camera bag and at least a fast lens for night etc. and a flash in addition to the 18-300.
