Some processing companies like Mpix will only accept jpegs...they don't take raw

No one wants raw files, and certainly not mpix, flickr, smugmug and the like. Same goes for printing services, which like png, tiff, etc

The only reason I can understand is because you have an immediate need to post a jpeg image on-line. Generally it is not difficult or even very time consuming to reconstruct a good jpeg copy when you have the raw file and a computer.

Your workflow and needs are drastically different than mine. I edit the raws I want to save or use for whatever purpose, save the best ones as tiff, and save jpegs of all that turn out well. I label them and never get rid of them. Everything is cataloged by date taken, with the album named. Easy to find by date..which might take some searching if going back years, but what if the album name has been forgotten? My archives are approaching 14 tb.. So, that takes more than 3 HDD's that size for the needed 2 backup copies. I have close to 100 tb of storage, all told.

Will do. Curious, how many cores does the cpu have?

I'm a Ryzen guy, and run the 5950X... the 12900K has surpassed it by a bit. No reason to switch, and I won't be upgrading anytime soon, even though Zen 4 and 13th gen Intel specs sound impressive.

Yes, on External Drives. Laptops by nature are portable and subject to rougher handling than an external HDD would be subject to. Also the possibility of sudden loss..
I try to keep ALL PHOTOS on AT LEAST 2 separate HDD's, working file and backup.
YES, I HAVE had HDD Failures with agonizing recovery process, drive on side, upside down, week long process...
Can't trust Hardware Drives, Can't Trust SSD's.....

2 copies is good, but three is best, with one off-site or in the cloud.

The 1TB might be a little not enough.
Todays programs will eat up a good bit of that. Try for a 2TB.
You might consider a 2TB SSD external drive. Costco has Sandisk ones. They had them on Prime for $180 something but are probably more now.

All SSD's are dropping, and will drop up to 10% more, according to a news story I read an hour ago.

I've been trying to sell an extra one, an Adata SU800, top rated, for 180, maybe even 160 for many moons, still in a sealed package... no nibbles, even.

It would be interesting to see how much/why that computer would be better than my HP with I5, 12Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD, and Win 11 that was $575 US at Costco.
Maybe my requirements are not that great?

Any number of comparison benchmarks can be found. Your laptop is prolly adequate, but latest ones, such as the one in the first post would likely out perform it by appx double....if not more.

Less technical challenges to pack the components into a larger box?

Precisely.... Cooling is far easier, as well.

Yes. Far better.

The best place to buy HDD's is direct at WD. First, send in an old or dead HDD, to get an unlimited 15% coupon. Then, join oe use Rakuten. In the fall, when WD has their best sales, Rakuten has been known to offer 15% cash back. (I'm up to $300 in cash back from all retailer participants, over the years.!!)

So, you wait for the appx $200 14 tb sales, and now you can get up to 30% more off!

My best was paying $135 for a 14 tb ext, and $230 for a 16 tb Red Pro plus $160 for their fastest 2.5" SSD--2 tb.

Me being a cheapskate, I've had lots of stuff shipped 200 miles south to a relative to save our 10.2% sales tax. I reckon I've saved over $1000 doing that (Best was the $550 I saved on my bitchin score of a EF 500 f/4 v II for $5400. Don't tell Gov Inslee......

The specs are fine. I'm writing from an older XPS laptop now. Personally, I prefer a larger monitor, working at a desk with an external higher-quality mouse. So, you might want to look at a mouse too, a blue-tooth ergonomic design.

I agree, and I have 2 28" 4k monitors at one workstation, and 2 32" 4k's at another.

But, like many of us, I take trips and like to edit some or all of my fresh stuff daily. I also like to upload a few to facebook or elswhere. I then use my cell as a mobil hotspot. So, at those times, I'm stuck with my oldish 15.6' nothing special display.

It's not a priority, as my 8th Gen i7 9750H and 8750H CPU's with dedicated GPU's work fine, but I'll eventually get a better laptop, with close to the latest specs, even if it costs $1.5-2.5k.

Agreed. I do like closeups of just the moon, as the details of the surface are displayed better... But only for that reason. I have oodles of moon shots, many perfectly timed and shot from the perfect location.

The first shot below was taken on 2/21/2021 at ~4:00PM in the afternoon. This shot was taken with a 500mm lens with a 2X teleconverter to give a 1000mm focal length with a circular polarizer to darken the sky. The image was shot as a 4K video and the individual video frames where stacked to reduce atmospheric turbulence. To stack the frames the .mov video was converter to a .ser file with the program PIPP (Planetary Imaging Preprocessor). The stacking was then done with Autostakkert and final sharpening was done with Registax6). (Note: These programs are all Freeware). The final image was cropped and converted to a Jpeg with PictureWindow.
The second image is a closeup of the crater Copernicus (Also visible in the first image) and taken on June 28, 2020 at night. The second image was made in a similar manner as the first but using a telescope with barlow lens to get an 8000mm focal length. All questions comments and suggestions are welcome.

Awesome!! I do pretty well with simple shots. I'll save your post and work on your technique and processing, for sure! Thanks!!

My recipe is:
a) use a very long lens (I use a 400mm mirror lens)
b) compose with an interesting foreground
c) Take, at least, two shots: one where the moon is well exposed and another where the foreground is well exposed
d) Combine both shots on post.

Just see this example:

Try again, and spot meter the moon itself. That image is way overexposed.

No. What do you think it will add?

FF: depending on mp, a larger pixel pitch=lower noise.

I'm a Canon shooter but I'd say the 850 will produce better images than the 500..... by a little
