Does anyone know of a good and simple free photo editor? I have GIMP and while it seems very powerful, I don't want to spend months learning how to use it. I tried to load Paint.net but it wants me to download a Microsoft service pack 3 and I hate doing that. I just want a basic editor, that maybe has some documentation I can print out.

Thanks

I really like this one "FastStone" and am using it exclusively now...
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Its Free, donation asked for if you like it, but not required to use it.~
"FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, user-friendly image browser, converter and editor. It has a nice array of features that include image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping, retouching and color adjustments. Its innovative but intuitive full-screen mode provides quick access to EXIF information, thumbnail browser and major functionalities via hidden toolbars that pop up when your mouse touches the four edges of the screen. Other features include a high quality magnifier and a musical slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image annotation, scanner support, histogram and much more. It supports all major graphic formats (BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, animated GIF, PNG, PCX, PSD, EPS, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA) and popular digital camera RAW formats (CRW, CR2, NEF, PEF, RAF, MRW, ORF, SRF, ARW, SR2, RW2 and DNG). I noticed something about the Ugly Hedgehog abbreviations used on the forum.

While hedgehog is one word (a least according to wikipedia) and the abbreviation should be UH, plenty of people seem to be using UHH.

I would like to establish one "official" abbreviation for contest titles and whatever else we might have in the future.

So what's the general opinion? UH or UHH?

I wondered what UH UHH stood for... ;-}
UH is quick, and Hedgehog is one word. Seems wrong to make it UHH to me. But my world will not end either way.

I 'm going to have a 50 mm and a 18-200mm lens with me which lens would be the best to use???

Which ever puts you at the right distance.
Which gives you better images?
Get there early for the best position. Test both of them.
You can always switch 1/2 way through. Then tell and show us your favorites.

All of us who have been shooting for some time have little gems we carry that cost virtually nothing but are indispensable when needed. I'll start this thread with 3 ideas
1. Wooden clip clothespins. You find this perfect nature shot of flowers but there's a weed or leaf intruding on the composition. The clothespin neatly and temporarily clips it out of the way.
2. A small spray bottle with water. Almost everything looks more attractive with water droplets on it.
3. A white business card. Not as effective as a snoot, but in a pinch it will more effectively direct your flash.
The purists who insist that I am messing with nature with 1 and 2 are welcome to be wrong.

Great Topic, and will be fun to hear the answers... Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, and for me it is VERY important living in Oregon... (We have something here called "rain"...)
"Plastic Bags."
I have several types & sizes; large leaf/garbage bag, White trash liner bags (can be used as reflector in a pintch), several sizes of Zip Lock Bags. All good for a variety of uses from quick rain protection for gear, to putting things I might find to take back for images at home. They all fit very compactly in my photo vest or bags.
I'm looking forward to others ideas too.

5) If your camera doesn't have a "Fireworks" preset mode (Some do, actually ! ) try this - ISO 100, f/8 , 2 second exposure. Anticipate the shell burst, and trigger as close to the "Pop" as you can - enjoy!

Great images and suggestions Jake.
I might add if you have IS/VR on your lens to turn it off if mounted on the tripod.

Also try varying the exposure times. Using a cable trigger if you have on makes this very easy, Just count 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, ETC
Also try varying the F stop to 11 even.

I sat our riverbank with two cameras mounted on tripods, with cable releases going through the entire show. I used a wide 10-22mm on one, and a 28-70mm on the other.

For some psychedelic pictures if you are using a zoom, try zooming it as the picture is being taken...
...also add some deliberate "Shake" to the image by moving the tripod a little... Lots of fun can be had with fireworks, I just wish we had more here! Show only lasts for about 20 minutes and its done!

We had about 25 from my camera group and it was so amazing how though we were all in effectively the same place, how different our images were!
Check your results to see everything is where you want it and adjust accordingly. You won't know for sure what you will have till you get home. A lot of fun!

I just bought an iPhone 4S. It has something called SIRI. Press the button and it asks how it can help. Ask something in plain English and it almost always responds and complies correctly.

I'm waiting for Jay Leno to get one of those phones, bring it out and ask it various questions, ie

I have canon rebel eos 500. What setting would I put it on to get the old brownish photoes?

Not sure on a "Rebel" but on my Canon 40D
Press
Picture Style Button
Turn Dial to Monochrome
Info Button
Set Button
Turn Dial to Toning Effect
Set Button
Dial to S:Sepia
Set Button
Menu to get back to Dark Screen

PS
While in the menu system there, you can also play with the Contrast and Sharpness, as well to change the effect of the sepia.

A Rebel may be different so you may have to read your manual for "Sepia" Images. on how to set your camera up to do this.
Good Luck.

On the 40D you have 3 choices to have a preset of styles effects etc. I have Sepia setup on one of mine to go to quickly.

Just spent a 1/2 day with a group of folks with cameras. Cameras that ranged from old Leicas to a Nikon 7000. People who you would think would know better. People that pronounce the word "picture" as PITCHER (someone who tosses something or a container for liquid) instead of (phonetically) PICT-CHUR. It is a very subtle thing but it sets my teeth on edge. Guess I am WAY too nit-picky but it is like someone pronounces your child's name wrong. I KNOW I'm gonna get flamed for this one.

I sincerely hope this is the biggest problem you face each day... I would hate to see what would happen if a real challenge came your way.

for prop aircraft, you want your shutter speed between 1/200 and 1/320. 1/500 or above will freeze the props, and it won't look natural. for jets, you'll probably want a faster shutter just to catch 'em, though if they're any distance away and you can pan with them effectively, you don't need to use as fast a shutter.

I have already married my 70-200 F4 L ! - Cheapest L lens there is W/O IS. Sharpest lens I have EVER used - even with a Tamron 1.4X which stays on 95 % of the time. This set-up stays on a monopod 95% of the time and is compact and lite weight.

I just got that lens a few months ago, I am loving it too!
I bought it from a camera buddy in one of my groups for $450.00.

I am posting this image in your thread just to show a recent image I got from it!

I just upgraded to a Canon EOS digital 60D from a Rebel XT and am in the fun stage of learning. I would like to get into the L series of Canon lenses next.

I currently have the following Canon lenses:
EFS 17-85 mm IS USM 1:4-5.6
EFS 18-135mm IS 1:3.5-5.6 (kit) came with the 60D
EF 70-300mm IS USM 1:4-5.6
EFS 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6II (kit) came with the Rebel

What would you recommend as my next lens? Where is the cheepest place to buy it? If possible.

I take pictures of most things that move and a lot that don't. Most anything that catches my eye. Totally undisiplined!

Thank you for your help.

Looks to me like you need some reach, so I would say the 400mm L 5.6, or the 100-400mm L 4.5-5.6. I have both. The 400 I got on Ebay, the 100-400 I bought from a member of my photo group...

Thanks

Makes a difference if you are shooting a crop or full frame.
My next lens for this type of shooting will hopefully be the 85mm 1.2.
