I just upgraded to a Canon EOS digital 60D from a Rebel XT and am in the fun stage of learning. I would like to get into the L series of Canon lenses next.

I currently have the following Canon lenses:
EFS 17-85 mm IS USM 1:4-5.6
EFS 18-135mm IS 1:3.5-5.6 (kit) came with the 60D
EF 70-300mm IS USM 1:4-5.6
EFS 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6II (kit) came with the Rebel

What would you recommend as my next lens? Where is the cheepest place to buy it? If possible.

I take pictures of most things that move and a lot that don't. Most anything that catches my eye. Totally undisiplined!

Thank you for your help.

I'm sure you've seen people bragging up their 24-70mm f2.8L USM lenses...I'm not a canon shooter, so I can't tell ya what to buy, but you did say you want an L lens, so that was just my 2 cents.

Thank you for your input. I noticed that lens on a professional photographers Canon camera when I was with my son's family during a shoot for their annual family pix. I haven't seen the results yet so I am anxiously waiting. I will be checking out the sharpness and clarity of the pictures for sure.

Sell those listed lenses for these two:

Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC HSM OS macro: http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/517-sigma1770f284osapsc

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS: http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/196-canon-ef-70-200mm-f4-usm-l-is-test-report--review

Instead of the EF 70-200mm, you may wish to consider this lens: Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM DO IS: http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/201-canon-ef-70-300mm-f45-56-usm-is-lab-test-report--review

As well, these 3 Web sites may help you decide:

Good Luck.

I would like to upgrade to the Canon L series. I just upgraded to the Canon 60D. I am looking at this for down the road in about 6 to 8 months. Plenty of time for research and any assistance this forum can give me.

Would the L series be any better than what I already have? OR am I just wasteing money?

An excellent lense and well worth the price if you must have a L? Good hunting

One of the advantages of the L lenses is you usually have a fixed maximum f stop that is faster, say 2.8. The build quality is usually better with these lenses. Are they sharper, thats very subjective. If you are a pro that demands the highest quality then by all means pop for the greatest. If you just want to make images and just enjoy what you are doing keep what you have. Remember, keeping up with the latest and greatest can be very expensive.

Yes your are right. Keeping up with the latest and the greatest is like keeping up with the Jones, there are too many of them.

Hi Vi-welcome to the Hog!
I currently use the Canon 70-300mm L lens and previously owned the DO version. I'll give you my opinion on these two lenses:

First-avoid the DO like the plague, it is incredibly soft and is only about $100 dollars cheaper than the L lens if bought new. Read the reviews on this lens and they will confirm what I found out firsthand.

Second-the 70-300mm L is exceptionally sharp and the IS works great. It is heavier and longer than the DO, but it isn't a complete beast-I shoot hand held quite a bit. Also, this lens doesn't accept teleconverters like the 70-200mm L lenses do.

Beware buying "L" lenses, they are so much better than Canon's other lenses that it is difficult to use anything else again. I know, after using the 70-300mm L, I just had to replace my 17-85mm with the 24-105mm F/4 L. I'm currently on the edge of my seat waiting for it to be delivered

I own the 24-70L, if I could marry it I would. It's on my camera 90% of the time. Well worth the money I put down on it.

It's a little heavy (especially paired with my 40D) but I got use to it.

You're right, they are an addiction! Sometimes referred to as "L Disease"
