I learn more with UHH than photography. I bought a new car, it came with 3 months of Sirius. They bombarded me with e-mails, letters, and a phone call to subscribe. When the 3 month trial expired, they sent another letter offering another 3 month trial for $2.00. On reading of your experiences, I just threw the letter in the trash. I can live with local radio and my bluetooth in the car. Thanx Hogs.

If you leave images on your flash card after a download. Here is a tip that I have found useful.

After a download, when you re-insert the flash card into your camera shoot a black frame. Lens cap on, black frame. Note you probably want to set the camera to manual exposure and manual focus for the black frame, else the camera's computer will do silly things.

Why shoot the black frame?

Next time you insert the card into the computer you can easily see where to stop with the new download.
Try it. The black frame costs nothing. Digital pics are (almost) free.

What other tips for free digital (almost) might you have? Please share them.

My camera (Canon XSi) and many others have a short video clip feature: you can record a 30 sec (or so) video with audio. Before or after the pano/HDR/etc, record a clip and announce the number of shots in the sequence as well as other (eg location) info.

Yesterday, I saw a showing of the documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old". The documentary is reviewed by the New York Times at https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/16/movies/peter-jackson-war-movie.html .
The documentary brings to life the archived films of the First World War and the techniques involved should be of interest to many UHH members. It's a special event feature and its next showing will be on 27 December. Peter Jackson ("Lord of the Rings" etc.) has achieved an incredible result of photography and cinematography. Be sure to stay for the 30 minute trailer where Jackson explains his methods. I recommend it for all.

I thought that for this blog the ending would be:
Wife: Would you give her my Nikon?
Husband: No, all her lenses are Canon.

"If your screen shows a status bar, and it gets stuck about 2/3's of the way across..."
I have had the very same occurrence on my iMac (24", early 2009, elCapitan, with HDD replaced with SSD). It happened about one boot in 5. I found that if, before booting, I disconnected the external USB hard drives, then the boot would complete without problem. After the boot completed, I reconnect the USB external drives.

Some good suggestions have been made. Another thing to check are "Login Items"- all those apps that start automatically when you boot/restart. Go to Apple Menu>Users & Groups>Login Items tab. (For you as the current user in the left panel). Make sure all items are legit' and called for. Select any that are not and remove them with the minus sign.

If you pay by credit card, check your card's documentation; the the credit card co. may provide a warranty, albeit for a limited time.

I've done the trip many times and here are a few comments & suggestions:
1. Dress for all seasons- the weather in the Rockies can change very fast.
2. On the Icefields Parkway, hopefully, you'll have good weather; stop at a lookout over Bow Lake, and if the light is right try and get some shots of the mountains across the lake with their reflections on the water.
3. Banff is a spa. Take time out to take a dip in the Upper Hot Springs. If you're a golfer, the course is not cheap but a must. Pack a camera for some "shots between shots". Also, check out the Sulphur Mountain Gondola lift. And again, if time permits, a picnic at Lake Minnewanka.
4. As suggested, definitely take the Columbia Icefield tour; disembark the Snow Cat for lots of photo ops.
5. Pack a picnic for the rest stop, en route to Jasper north of the Columbia Icefields, near the foot of the Athabaska Glacier. Don't feed the bears!
6. If you have time, before going north to Jasper, head west from Lake Louise thru the Kickinghorse Pass at least as far as Field, BC. and Moraine Lake. The scenery is magnificent. Then double back to Lake Louise.

I could go on and on but I'm sure you'll have a great trip.

NOMOROBO is free. However, it works only with land lines that are serviced by Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) such as ATT UVERSE. We have had it for about a year and find it to be very effective. It does not interfere with appointment reminders. I'm not aware of it interfering with school closings or weather alerts. In our area (Dallas), such alerts are posted on TV news or radio, not by telephone calls. Tornado sightings, of course, set off sirens.
NOMOROBO monitors incoming calls to your number and between the first and second ring will access its data base of about 500,000 known tel-marketers and scammers and will disconnect before the second ring if it gets a "hit".

A couple of points for preparation prior to upgrading your PSE13 catalog to LR:
1. LR can make some unexpected changes to PSE dates. Ensure that all your images are fully dated in mm/dd/yyyy format. Do not leave out any portion of the date.
2. Your PSE tags will go over to LR but before making the upgrade of the PSE catalog, select all your images in the PSE Organizer and execute file>save metadata to files.

My camera/lens combo is a Canon Rebel XSi with Canon Zoom EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens. This has been my "walk around/travel" combo for several years. 'Till now it has performed very well. For the past few weeks however the lens, when in auto-focus mode, has had difficulty locking into focus. It continues to search for focus. I can focus it manually.
I recently acquired a Canon EF 50mm 1.8II. This lens focuses smoothly and quickly in AF mode on the same camera body, with the same settings.
Any ideas as to what the problem is with the Zoom 17-85 lens and how to fix?

Thanx to all for your comments and suggestions. I took the camera & lens to a camera store (a good one) with expert sales people. After testing the lens, they concluded that a control processor within the lens was the problem. They suggested a local camera repair shop but warned that labour runs about $100/hour. Since this lens, used but in good working order "ebays" for about $175 to $200 I doubt the economics of repairing the lens since I would have to settle for about half that amount. The lens does focus sharp in MF mode, with a blink by the focus point light and focus confirmation light in the viewfinder plus a ready "beep". It takes me back to my first viewfinder camera in pre-AF days but it works. Also, for situations where AF would be advantageous, I can deploy my 50mm 1.8II.
So, again thanx for your comments; I'll make do until I upgrade the XSi to the latest wonder on B&H's shelves.
