Yesterday, I saw a showing of the documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old". The documentary is reviewed by the New York Times at

The documentary brings to life the archived films of the First World War and the techniques involved should be of interest to many UHH members. It's a special event feature and its next showing will be on 27 December. Peter Jackson ("Lord of the Rings" etc.) has achieved an incredible result of photography and cinematography. Be sure to stay for the 30 minute trailer where Jackson explains his methods. I recommend it for all.
One more spin on 27th of December in AMC theaters.

Saw it in 3D at my local Regal theater last night. Overwhelming to say the least. Emotionally wrenching. Those long dead heroes are brought back to life. Much of that 100+ year old footage looks like it could have been captured last week. Many scenes are not for the faint of heart. Simply amazing.
Thank you for this information! I'm going to try to get tickets to see it here on the 27th in NC

Be aware that the first 15-20 minutes is unrestored film. Here is a review. Hope you get to see it in 3D, but if not, it's still very worthwhile.

There was a feature on the news about this, last night. It's absolutely astonishing to see what Peter Jackson was able to do with old, grainy, jerky, faded, silent, black & white footage. Kudos to him and others like him who restore and convert old film, photos and sound recordings to modern quality and digital format so they'll never be lost.

This is a film everyone, yes especially today's snow flake generation.
No coloring books or safe rooms, just hard life.
I agree with all of the above comments.
In addition to the heart-wrenching nature of the subject, the technology involved is fascinating.
This movie (seen in 3D here), is nearly the quality of “Saving Private Ryan” or “The Deer Hunter” in it’s emotional instruction of what war does to people.

It's not playing in very many theaters across the country, especially in 3D, and I believe the only scheduled remaining date at this point is for December 27th. However, the reception for it, and the reviews, have been so spectacular that I would not be surprised if they attempt to schedule some additional dates. A warning though, this is a difficult film to watch with a number of very painfully explicit scenes. I would not take anyone who is very young, or of a sensitive nature, to see it.
Will do. Looks worthwhile and it is 3D here. Glad to support his effort.

I loved it. Outstanding documentary. Loved it.
It may be difficult to see except in larger cities. It was shown in Topeka 2 times on Monday and 2 times on a later date. I don't know how extensive the showings will be. It is a documentary, not a bunch of exploding stuff with main actors, romance, and men surviving impossible falls etc. This may limit its appeal to theaters who see no point wasting their space on stuff only adults will attend. The small theater in a theater complex where I saw it was packed.
I am in Topeka. In Kansas City they have the WW1 museum (only one in USA). If you can go to it you won't regret it. It is a tremendous experience.
I just bought my tickets for 12/27/18 showing. Looking forward to it.
