Yes, I'm pretty sure you're right. Was it hovering?
It do some hovering but mostly it was cruising around about 20ft above the grass.
I THINK this is a northern harrier but......I'm not great with bird identification.

PSergal,
When was this shot taken?
I ask because it looks like winter has set in at Bosque and I'll be going next week.
Year before last when I went the 1st week of November there were very few cranes and almost no snow geese yet due to warm weather at their stops in Colorado.
So if this shot was taken recently it looks positive for seeing more birds this trip.
The shot was taken last Wednesday (day before thanksgiving)
The last couple of years at BdA have been a little dissapointing in terms of cranes and geese.
I am here to tell you.......they're baaaack!!
The two ponds just north of the visitors center are down to one pond and they've put in a paved parking area. This pond had lots and lots of cranes around sunrise to 8:00.
There are lots of snow geese around too but I'm not sure where they spent the night.
It was about 20º just before sunrise so......yes......winter has arrived.
Good Luck!
BTW
I've often found that if there aren't many cranes around at BdA......the Ladd Gorden preserve in Bernardo may be where they're at.
This bald eagle got himself a snow goose. The wind took the feathers along in a nice line behind the scene of the crime.

What a wonderful photo and caption!!! Bosque del Apache?
Hi Dirk
Yep this was taken at BDA. For some reason the population of turkeys at BDA has exploded over the last 2 or 3 years.
A few years ago I’d rarely see one or two. Now, I frequently see groups as large as 30 or more at a time.
Also.....this year there are more Sandhills cranes than in the recent past.
1.25 million years ago a volcanic explosion created a caldera 13 miles across. This was taken inside the caldera near one edge.
My crazy daughter had just bought a "balloon hat" and I took a picture of her with local weatherman and balloon fiesta legend, Steve Stucker.
I was in the Canon tent myself yesterday.
I have SOooo many balloon photos that I decided to just go light yesterday and brought my little fujifilm camera with me. I quickly regretted it but......it did kind of free me up to do more watching and less shooting.
Getting to the fiesta from Rio Rancho yesterday morning was a disaster and I missed the mass accention but the Canon tent made the trip worth while.
Seeing the 1Dx with the 400 2.8 attached sitting on the deck behind the tent made me consider a felony atempt.
Got the opportunity to play around with the EOS R in the Canon sponsor tent at the Albuquerque Ballon Fiesta yesterday. I looks and feels like a top notch camera but.......this old dog would definitely need some time to adapt to the new controls.
I'm hoping that they develop a "7D II like" version sometime soon.
After you've had the time to get adjusted to the new equipment, could you post your thoughts?
Also......an F/4 is an F/4
I assume the competitions take place outdoors in good light?? If so, and assuming you are a Canon shooter, the 70-300L is a terrific lens. (the non L version isn't nearly as good but it is considerabley less expensive)
https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspxIt's about 1/5 the price of the 300 2.8 (which I lust for) and gives you some focal length flexibility while being compact and fairly light weight.
If the competitions are indoors in poor light.........you'll have to spend the big $$$s or shoot at very high ISOs
About 10 minutes before the official "dawn"
Laundering your spare battery is not recommended.
