Any of you canon 5d Mk 11,111,IV or 6d and 1D owners give me your thoughts on my dilema, My new EOS R is supposed to be arriving on tuesday (Very excited) I sold my 5d mk 11 with a 24-70 f2.8 lens as this one comes with a 24-105 f4 lens in the kit. As this camera is mirrorless, the final lens element is slightly closer to the sensor. This, they say, gives the f4 the equivalent to and f2.8. Don't know if I buy this or not. However what is your general consesus on the difference, if any of these two lenses.

Well, an f4 lens does NOT become a 2.8 lens ! - But, what does happen is the lens designers have more freedom as to how close the rear element can come to the sensor - and if done properly, this should result in a BETTER (IQ) lens all the way round - especially as to shorter focal lengths. The lens can also ( have the potential ) to be physically smaller/lighter/cheaper with fewer elements.

I think someone in the marketing department must have been absent on the day they covered optics.

But, being the thorough type of person I try to be. Perhaps they mixed up T-stops and F-stops. That is always a possibility.

For me I shall not get into the design element, but direct you to get the equipment and do your own test. gordnanaimo as UHH you have now been trained and indoctrinated to look for a problem before there is one. To find the most expensive solution to a no problems and then over spend.

Keep us close and your banker closer.

Pretty straightforward regardless of the body - 1 stop slower, 35mm longer at full zoom and has IS. Also depending on which version of the 24-70 and 24-105, DXOMark shows the tstop to be at least a stop slower as well. As mentioned, the IQ MAY be better on the mirrorless body at the wide end, but the actual light transmission shouldn’t change.

Did not know Canon made 5D mk 11 or 111. As for the f/4 becoming an f/2.8, who told you that pile of horse hooie?!

I'm just curious about why anyone would sell excellent existing gear for largely unknown new stuff, sight unseen.

f4 is f4 regardless of the camera or lens.
Let us know how the camera and lens are.Would like some real live user input on it.
Sounds exciting.

A lens lets in a maximum of what ever the f stop is. You want a f 4.5 lents at .5 sec. to take a better picture in the dark for instance you up the ISO. The max light in a lens is the max light. A 5 gal gas can can't hold 6 gallons of water.

Don't buy that argument that f/4 is equivalent to f/2.8. It's pure BS.

Being a huge Canon guy, and a former Nikon file and digital person as well, I have carefully studied the reviews on your new camera as well as the images. It will definitely be a longer learning curve as they have removed a lot of button which I always use, specifically the ISO button. Good luck with the new toy. An F4 is an F4 and I don't know where someone said otherwise. The new mirrorless 24-105lL/4 lens for the new toy looks every bit as big as the current 24-105L/4, which leads me to question as to why go mirrorless, with a smaller body, but with lenses that are just as big. The new 24-70/2 is a monster. But Canon has to play the game to stay relevant. Good shooting!

Buttons are customizable and the control ring is as well.
Set whatever you like to be ISO and go to town.
I believe physics determines amount of light the size of a lens, f2.8/f4 or whatever has to have that amount of light go through it.

You should have kept the 24-70 f/2.8 because it is a great lens and with the adapter you can use it on your new camera. But if you have the money, buy the new native 28-70mm f/2 lens and you'll be even better off. What a lens that one is going to be!

Got the opportunity to play around with the EOS R in the Canon sponsor tent at the Albuquerque Ballon Fiesta yesterday. I looks and feels like a top notch camera but.......this old dog would definitely need some time to adapt to the new controls.
I'm hoping that they develop a "7D II like" version sometime soon.
After you've had the time to get adjusted to the new equipment, could you post your thoughts?

Also......an F/4 is an F/4

Who is "they"?

An f4 lens is an f4 lens. Just remember the aperture (f-stop) of a lens is a calculation FL/AD: focal length divided by the apertures diameter.
