This bald eagle got himself a snow goose. The wind took the feathers along in a nice line behind the scene of the crime.

being an apex predator means (a) never having to say you're sorry and (b) not having to worry overmuch about table manners...

Good work, Paul! Always thought of the bald eagle as more of a scavenger.

PSergal,

When was this shot taken?

I ask because it looks like winter has set in at Bosque and I'll be going next week.

Year before last when I went the 1st week of November there were very few cranes and almost no snow geese yet due to warm weather at their stops in Colorado.

So if this shot was taken recently it looks positive for seeing more birds this trip.

The shot was taken last Wednesday (day before thanksgiving)
The last couple of years at BdA have been a little dissapointing in terms of cranes and geese.
I am here to tell you.......they're baaaack!!

The two ponds just north of the visitors center are down to one pond and they've put in a paved parking area. This pond had lots and lots of cranes around sunrise to 8:00.
There are lots of snow geese around too but I'm not sure where they spent the night.

It was about 20º just before sunrise so......yes......winter has arrived.
Good Luck!

BTW
I've often found that if there aren't many cranes around at BdA......the Ladd Gorden preserve in Bernardo may be where they're at.

Paul,

Thanks so very much for the quick response. Good to know they're back and about the changes to the Crane Pool area. Also, thanks for the tip about the Ladd Gorden Water Fowl Complex. I think I'll check it out when I'm in Socorro next week.
