Haven't used my macro lenses in a while so I stuck a twig in a jar of sand and water and transplanted an ant to it(the ant won't cross the water) pre-focused on a spot and waited for him to walk into it.

I think I would use balloons instead, using two would provide a backup in case one fails.
I remember as a kid, my kites either nose diving or spiraling into the ground. LOL

This is great info but I think what the OP wants to do is view in real time on his computer screen what the camera is seeing..
That wold be a great help when doing macros on my table-top studio.
Is that what a tether accomplishes as opposed to the Eye-Fi card which only transfers captured images. ?
