the xti does not have live view on the camera. but is there any software that i can install on my laptop for live view? i'm disabled and can not get very low to the ground (well i can but getting back up would be the problem lol) and i would like to use my comp screen as a live view. then i could use a mono pod to hold my camera low and see whats going on, before i take a shot.
Thanks for any help..

Yes, you can use a tether or purchase an Eye-Fi card for about $45. I believe your camera will work with the card but check it first on Google. The tether is very simple and you can get on that goes up to about 30 ft.. With the card you must keep your monitor or lap top within 40 ft I think. Haven't used it for a few months but it worked great for what I needed.

HI, And thanks for the fast reply. Is that card for the camera or the computer?

The Eye-Fi card is a memory card that will transfer your pictures and videos to your computer over a WiFi network as long as your camera is on, and also share them on Facebook, YouTube, and many of the other social networking and photo storage sites. It will only work on networks that it recognizes (you have to set it up to recognize the network-don't worry, it's easy!) though unless you get the pro version and then it will work at certain wifi hotspots too. I have one and I loved it when my baby was in the NICU for 2 months. I could take pictures of her while we were there and as soon as we got home I would turn my camera on and they went straight to my Facebook. When me moved though it stopped transferring the pictures. We used the same router so it should be the same network, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Wish I did though..

This is great info but I think what the OP wants to do is view in real time on his computer screen what the camera is seeing..
That wold be a great help when doing macros on my table-top studio.
Is that what a tether accomplishes as opposed to the Eye-Fi card which only transfers captured images. ?

You are corect sir. if you want live on your comp by tether if you have a canon it has to have live view on the camera itself to work mine does not have live view.

Laughbrian, the program disks you got with the camera should have Canon's teathering program on one of them them. It is called "EOS Utility" and allows you not only to see what the sensor is seeing but to use the Autofocus, adjust the shutter speed, f/stop and ISO as well as take the photo. Does that sound like what you want? if you don't have the disks, it is available on the canon website as a download for free. According to Canon's website, Eos utility should work with the XTI

yes i can control the camera even the shutter but since the xti has no live view it will not show the pic on my screen. the camera has to have live view or all you get is controls on your computer. no live view. my camera is to old. but i can triger it with my comp just cant see what the camera sees.

I believe the card and the computer have to share a local network. Right? If you're away from a local network -- like outside, say -- it won't work.

No viewing screen on the XTi. Only a view finder.

Unfortunately there is no way to get live view on this model. I suggest that you buy either a Canon T2i or T3i body. Right now these can be had for around $500. I have the T2i and it works perfectly with the Canon Utility Software for live view with function operations on any computer. Of course there are a couple of function that must still be down on camera like the mode selection and turning auto focus of and on. I use my T2i tethered with live view every day for product photography. It will work great.

This Youtube article was made a while ago. (They had it since Feb 2005.) A bunch of other cameras have been added to their growing list, like Canon, Nikon, Etc. cameras, since then.

If this link doesn't work, just goto Youtube and search Capture One 6 or goto the Phase One site and look around.
