I had planned a day in Pontiac (about 30 miles from me) taking part in a free class on macro photography and taking part in a demo day at a camera store there. Unfortunately, my son's day program was cancelled for the day and I was stuck at home. Not a lot to shoot in my yard. This was about it.

Just a drop of color

Here is another version I have. Original first.

I like the original best. He has kind eyes. On download, I can get up close enough to see that he could use a facial cleanse ;). His smile tells of poor dental care, but a kind and lovable soul.

I thought I would try this. It did take a ton of shots to get this.

Let me know.

I really like this one! I think you got a winner here. I like the catch light in the eye. I agree with the comment "peek a boo" feel to it. This is just such a cute capture. Great job.

Ok, I read comments on the first page and decided to reply before reading further.

I lover the lines at the curb. They lead me through the frame to the curve that took me out and back to the beginning for a second look see. On download I felt the focus wasn't great on his hands or face and I was trying to get a good look at them. His hands look dark and I can't tell if it's gloves, dirt, bad skin or what. I couldn't look into his face and see details.

I like the composition and the lines. I like the story it tells, but I wish the face and hands could tell me more.

You know I love your work, this one just doesn't give me that strong jaw dropping awe that I normally have when viewing your images.

The colour rendition is second to none.

I love the color! I love that odd looking dog :). However, I love the color and detail on the instruments so much!

The top left corner is distracting to me a little, but overall, I love this image.

I checked you data on the first picture. The compositions are not real exciting but OK. If you camera does ISO 800 OK then I would set for that. The pictures are not too sharp. The rule I was taught is that the shutter speed should be equal to 1/mm lens. If you lens was 114, then speed should be 1/114. Yours was much slower. I very much like to see people experimenting and trying new things. I am not very good at portraits. Thanks for posting and asking for help. David

I was trying to get my shutter speed fast enough, but don't like the photo results with higher iso's so I try everything else first. Thanks for looking and commenting.

I'm glad you like it! I'm using Photoshop Elements 11, but I started with PSE-2 and used PSE-4 for years. PSE-11 has a nifty cool tool called Smart Brush with an Eye Brightener. Yay! Except it didn't work. He looked like a zombie! Ack. So I reverted to the Ways of the Ancients. Working on a copied layer (so I could turn it off to see what I was doing) around 125% magnification I used the Selection Brush tool with a fairly soft edge to very carefully select the eyes only, then very carefully raised their brightness (pupil, iris, and whites together) juuust a little. Had to squint a lot and toggle it off and on to be sure I wasn't getting the zombie look again. When I was satisfied with the overall sparkle I still noticed his eyes looked pretty red (poor guy—worried about his dad!), so I used the saturation sponge in desaturate mode to reduce but not remove the redness.

I sure hope your brother is all right! Surgery is scary!
I'm glad you like it! I'm using Photoshop Elements... (show quote)

He had a routine hernia surgery, but had some difficulty with the anesthesia. He is doing ok. Thank you.

Seeing that you gave us permission I have just done a very quick edit on the first one. Just changed white balance to try for a better skin tone and removed the coloured things in the scene.

Very nice, I knew it would look better without the colored mess there. An improvement for sure.

I think the first one is a great image that would benefit from a crop. (IMHO)
