I think that one of the reasons for the backlog for getting the new D850 is that Nikon has shelves of D5 and D850 bodies sitting at the Olympics to be able to serve all the professional photographers at the Games (so if any pro has a breakdown, they can get a working camera right away). The same is true for Canon. The article published at DPReview didn't have numbers, but there were photos of lots of brand new bodies sitting on shelves.

Bob, did you put an order in, or just a request to be informed when it is in stock. B&H is filling orders in the order that they were placed. Since there is a significant number of these, it may be awhile before they have stock on the shelves. Everyone that I know had an order with B&H placed in November got their cameras already.

I can't tell you about the lag time for Amazon. I can tell you I ordered a D850 from B&H 1/4/18 and got it 2/2.

HI Everyone,

I am a new member of the forum. I am a retired Boston Terrier Rescuer who loves to quilt. I will be taking pictures of my dogs, my quilts, my goats and my family. I am trying to decide what dslr camera to purchase and that is why I decided to join this list. Hopefully, those who have used a lot of cameras can point me in the right direction. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg for a camera, but I want a nice camera that will last me the rest of my life. I figure I can get a decent camera for under $1000. The lenses will cost more I know. But I am hoping I don't have to spend enough to buy a car like you do on some of the newer sewing machines. Thank you. :)
HI Everyone, br br I am a new member of the foru... (show quote)

If you want a camera to last you the rest of your life, DON'T buy an entry level dslr. I didn't with my first dslr in 2011, a 16.4 megapixel D5100 (the step up from the entry level D3100) with two lenses, a 18-55mm and a 55-300mm. I was very happy with the quality of the images I was able to capture, but I rapidly got frustrated by having to go through menus to change ISO and white balance. It is much easier to change preferences with a "prosumer" level body. I became sorry that I didn't buy the D7000 instead of the D5100.

I'm not suggesting that you spend so much to buy a D7500 or the Canon equilivants new. NikonUSA is running a sale on a new D7200 kitted with a 18-140mm lens for $1299, but a factory refurbished combo can be had for less.

I would make a plea for you not to buy a "kit" lens for any camera you purchase. I got a 18-200mm lens in 2014 just prior to a trip to Italy, and that is the only lens I took on the trip, with great flexibility in my shot selection and excellent results in my images. Consider the less expensive "semi kit" 18-140mm as I found that I did not use the full extent of the telephoto for many of my shots.

So, in summary, think about stretching your budget and buy something that you will not outgrow so fast. Others here can tell you what Canon model and lens might be a similar "prosumer" level purchase for body and lens. Since the arrival of the D7500, D500 and the D750, and the Canon EOS 6D Mark II, there are trade-ins as people moved to these more sophisticated models. There are good values to be had in low shutter count used cameras and well cared for lenses, as well as factory refurbished models.

In general, for most in this forum, a "walk around lens" means a one lens attached to the camera, and not walking around with a camera bag filled with small zooms and primes. Most of us would not consider the 24-70 lens (weight 2 pounds 6.4 ounces {or just over 1 kg} for the lens only) a walk-around lens. The term has more relevance to travel photography, where weight carried all day is a consideration. That is why most of us would think of a "walk around" lens to be an 18-200 or 18-300 mm lens in DX, or a 24-120 or 28-300 in FX. Enough reach on the telephoto end, and enough wide angle, and no other lens carted along. A professional would rarely consider a "walk around" due to the trade off in lens sharpness, so they might "walk around" with (to use a Nikon example) a 14-24 f2.8, a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2,8--$7100 in glass alone and a lot of weight. But for the rest of us, it is making a decision that we don't want to change lenses in the field and carry multiple lenses on our "trip." One could make a case that using a fast mild wide-angle lens with a camera that has a great sensor so you can crop and see detail in post production will give a lot of flexibility, but I personally don't buy that premise. My walk around lens for my D850 is the Nikkor 24-120mm f4 VR.

For your budget you should consider buying a used or refurbished Canon or Nikon (for example B&H is selling a refurbished D7200 for $789). You’ll get a lot more features than on the entry level products.

As soon as you switch from auto to any of the manual modes(P,A, or S) the camera will revert back to the last presets for manual control of ISO and white balance. When you switch to shutter priority set your white balance for the appropriate color temperature and set what ISO you want (or reset to automatic). It can be easy to forget unless you can get in the habit of resetting each time you go manual.

Hi Jim welcome to the forums. Have you had your D750 long or are you new to the world of digital slrs? What lenses do you have, and are you happy with them? I got my first FX camera last week and I love it!

Also, since you are contemplating purchasing a supracided model, there are some D7200 bodies available for sale that are refurbished or slightly used. Just be careful with grey market products.

just a few examples of some photos I took yesterday with the 24-120 on my D5100. The lens focus is quick and accurate, and there is nice bokeh. Can't wait to try it on my new camera body.

Besides the weight difference the 24-120 is smaller and has 50 mm more reach. Now nobody here will try to say that the 24-70 vr 2.8 isn’t a great lens and it will be sharper than the 24-120, but for traveling around with one lens, the smaller lighter lens might be a better choice.

i started this post in the hope that it might help someone else that had a similar occurrence, but hadn't figured out the causation. It really didn't take me more than a moment to comprehend the problem and the solution. The reason I made myself susceptible to trolls is something I noted in some photography classes: many people don't read their manuals and don't know how to work the full capacities of their cameras. For example, I had to show 2 people in the winter photography class how to access the monochrome setting from their menus. There have been other examples where I have been able to help people with their digital Nikons. How many hobby photographers never take their digital SLRs out of "auto" for shooting? If you come from a film background and not from a "point and shoot" camera, you have a better understanding of control and perspective. My spouse tends to use only "auto" when using the D5100, because she just wants to take the shot, and not think about the setup. Somehow, I suspect she is not alone in her thinking! For the most part, the algorithms in the camera do a pretty good job on "auto", but there are plenty of times a manual setting gets a better picture.

I believe that most of the people who buy entry level DSLRs are not the most sophisticated or learned photographers. That does not mean that they are incapable of acquiring new skills, and the entry level cameras are a good teaching tool. I bought my D5100 7 years ago, as an entry DSLR, and have gotten excellent results with it, but it is time to move on FX and 4k video. I'll keep the D5100 as a second body.
