I backup all the photo files from my computer to both an external drive and to the "cloud".

I use a simple backup software (app) called SyncBack to do the backups to the external drive unattended regularly (you can specify the frequency, I use daily). It is smart enough after the 1st backup to only update files that have changed or been added so it doesn't take forever for updates.

Since I have Amazon Prime, I use Amazon Photos, a "cloud" solution, which is free if you have Prime . A cloud solution is the only way to recover from a true disaster like fire, hurricane or tornado, or any major tragedy.

Thank you, PH. I now have confirmed one backup to an external drive and I'm backing up to Amazon Photos as we speak! Regards, JDM

If you want portability, look at getting two 4TB or 5TB Western Digital (WD) Passports, about $150 each. These are USB devices, about the size and shape of paperback books. Use 1 as your primary connected storage for all your image files, use the 2nd as a back-up. Or, assume your TimeMachine is your backup and skip the 2nd HD. Keep your LRCAT catalog on your local drive, just the image files on the HD. You can do both on the HD too, if the performance is acceptable.

Regarding large files and increased storage needs, assure you aggressively cull your images. Taking 100 images and keeping this all is silly and as you can see now, expensive in both time and storage capacity. Look at your work critically and physically delete all the miserable results as well as the good but duplicative.

For the TimeMachine, it should see and back-up connected devices like these HDs. But, don't assume. Look into it and confirm.

Thank you, CHG. I did verify that time machine is backing up my photo library and I figured out how to back up to Amazon Photo. Before I did, I did the big Cull, and knocked 2,000 photos off of my file, which is great as the backup to Amazon is taking quite a long time. Thank you for the great advice.

Thank you all for such wonderful advice. I have found my way to Amazon's backup service and am uploading now! (It looks like it might take some time.) Meanwhile, I did confirm that time machine is also backing up my photos on an external hard drive as well.

As always, I feel very lucky to be part of such a smart and generous community!

I'm not familiar with the Mac OS - i just want to share that I do NOT rely on any form of cloud service. They can just decide to go out of business (remember AOL's "X" drive?). You need to learn how to clone or make images of your storage system. Or you can brute force copy all your images or Lightroom files on more than one drive. Drives do fail.

Dunno if you have a local community college that teaches this sort of thing or not - It might be worth the $$ and time. Just make sure it's related to the Mac. I will be following this thread with interest to see the various suggestions. Final suggestion: do what the professionals do. You can't go wrong - their file storage = their bottom line

I’m looking for help to add additional storage and backup for my lightroom catalogue. (My apologies in advance for not being that technical … hence why I’m reaching out to you.)

I’ve been shooting with Nikon D750 and just got the D850 for Christmas. Due to the file size of the images of the 850, I started thinking about (and worrying about) storage, which got me then thinking about backup, too. I fear that both situations are inadequate.

Here’s my setup:
~MacBook Pro (2019)
~Lightroom Photoshop with all images stored on external drive (WD 2TB My Passport Ultra; 7000+ images)
~Backup to Time Machine on external drive (again a WD 2TB My Passport Ultra … I’ve assumed all along that this backs up my lightroom catalogue residing on the other external drive … is that true?)

Please advise on storage space and backup with any/all recommendations. I am an Amazon Prime Member so I have access to their free storage. I have OneDrive and storage on Microsoft360. I’d also be willing to subscribe to a backup service if it makes the most sense. I have no idea how to go about copying or uploading my lightroom catalogue from the external hard drive to a new backup location.

I know I’m asking a lot. I’m hoping there’s a kind soul out there in the mood to take on a challenge!

Many thanks for your help and patience!

I am considering the purchase of a small travel camera. My choices have come down to Leica C-LUX vs. Panasonic ZS200.

On paper I cannot see any difference that would justify the Leica being over $200 more expensive. Is it worth the extra money other than for prestige value?

I would appreciate comments from persons who have had experience with both brands.

I carry the Leica C-Lux as my “purse” camera, when I don’t want to drag my Nikon kit around. It’s a great little camera. Alexander S. White wrote Photographer’s Guides for both cameras and notes that, while similar, they are not identical. I’ve never shot the Panasonic. I am most happy with the image quality from the C-Lux. Good luck with your decision. I don’t think you can go wrong either way. ~JDM

I have a used Nikon D750 with a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1.2G ED N lens. I would like to take pictures of flowers, being real close and getting all the detail. I find that I can not get close enough with what I have. I have to be too far away to get the camera to focus on the subject. Any suggestions on a good macro lens? I have a 50mm lens I just purchased and it will focus on the floor but not the subject in my lap. what am I doing wrong? There has to be something that I am missing. All help and comments are appreciated.

Another vote for the 105mm 2.8. I shoot with the 750, have the 2.8 trinity and a bunch of 1.4 primes, and my 105 is definitely the best in the bag. I have great success with it for portraits, too. ~jdm

I bought Adobe PS 15 several years ago. I've been trying to put it on my Mac, and when I get to put in my serial # it tells me I have it on 3 computers now and must delete it from one to proceed, I have done this but it will not take the serial# So I phoned Adobe and get someone in India , that I can hardly understand and I do not know what they are trying to tell me to do. I have tried 3 times and end up no where, or the line dies.
Any suggestions out there?

Use their live chat feature instead of calling. I had a similar experience of long wait times, language barrier, and ultimate disconnection by phone. I then tried chat and they resolved my issue within minutes by taking control of my screen and fixing my issue. Definitely worth a try! ~JDM

Hi JDM,
I would not put your glass and cameras in those bags. If you get rid of the visible mold you are likely to have outgassing of acid, base or other chemicals used. All etch glass. Also, you need to prevent the mold from coming back. Mold likes surfaces and niches, like camera gear.
Regrets on the bags.

Thank you for this. I have invested so much in my gear that I don't want to risk it over a few bags. Fortunately, like most of us, I have more bags than I need. Fortunately my gear was in two of my favorites that were not affected. Cheers!

I recently moved and packed a box full of camera bags (no equipment ... just the bags.) I just opened the box after several months and one of the bags, a Kelly Moore canvas and leather pilot backpack, was covered with mold. There were several other non-leather camera bags in the box, zipped or clasped, showing no signs of mold.

All of the bags were pricey and I’d like to save them, but I have no intention of doing so if it would jeopardize my gear. My question is, is it possible to de-mold the bags and, if so, what would you recommend to treat the present or potential mold? But more importantly, is it too great a risk and should I just chuck them and cut the loss?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

LR knows the "absolute" path to each individual file. So, the files must reside at exactly the same places, by name and folder structure, on the new computer. Your missing images should have a small exclamation point in the upper right corner. If you click that icon, you should get a pop-up to 'locate' the file. In that window should be the old location that tells you where to go to find the old file on the old computer. If these images have already been copied to the new computer, you can use the <locate> button to navigate to that new location. If you work from the All Photographs view of the Catalog, when you update the location of one image, all images in the same folder will be updated automatically.

I gave this a try from “all photos” to “locate” and then “find nearby missing photos” and did locate the file in which the images reside on the external drive of my new computer. I get as far as clicking on the correct file, yet the “select” button at the bottom of the screen remains grey-ed out. Any ideas? Many thanks!

Paul's reply is spot on.

Calling Adobe on the phone is no longer the preferred method of support. My guess is that it is too hard to find enough people to hire. Again, that's a guess.

Adobe instead provides "online chats". You type and they type back. They can, with your OK, run your computer remotely. I've never used it myself, but reviews are generally quite good.

You should be able to initiate a chat here: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html

“No longer the preferred method of support” is an understatement! The automated voice that answered my call told me it would be 37 minutes of wait time; one hour and 7 minutes later, my call was answered by a gentleman who had a very heavy accent and was extremely difficult to understand. He became noticeably annoyed by my lack of technical skills, and soon said he had to end the call so he could help other customers. Not what I call Customer Service.

Thank you for your advice. I’ll give the online chat a try.
