Is anyone using these?

I have a couple of these that I received as a gift. They get used periodically. I’m not too sure what the comment about repairs is about? Anyway, in use I found them to be not convenient since when they are not on the lens, they are bulky. Good protection from bumps and stuff though in a regular backpack when I do not take a fitted camera bag. Mostly, I buy knock off Nikon lens caps on eBay in a few sizes and keep them around or in my bag when travelling. I pay about $1.50 each.

I would like to hear everyone's feelings about the Tamron 45mm 1.8 for a Nikon d810. I've been comparing it to the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 . While the nikkor is cheaper it in not weather sealed and does not have VC.I have looked at several reviewas with all the technical stuff but would appreciate some real world down to earth comments/feelings.

I have a D810 and use a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D in many shooting applications. I can see no reason to spend more money on weather sealing or VC. My images are with this combo are very good.

I’ve been out of using photo editing software for many years when my granddaughter asked me to take her engagement photos. I used a Nikon D5600 with a 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 lens that just can never throw the background out of focus. So I’m looking for a cheap, easy to use software that will help me throw the image background out of focus. Thanks

What you need is a wide aperture prime lens. Many will not agree, but for what you’re doing look at the 85mm f/1.4. If you want pro quality images, you have to gear up. And if you want to get more creative, buy a good quality UV filter and use a light smear of Vaseline on the glass leaving the centre alone. Compose with a tight cop and think about not using an eye level shooting angle.

I am using LR 6.1.1 and PSE 11 with no difficulties. When I use PSE 11 I first export the image as a TIF and then continue. I have always done it this way.

For one thing I wouldn't want to have the labs do the printing or scanning.

I use a lab in Toronto (Northern Artists) to develop and scan. Interested to know why you say you would not have a lab do the scans.

My wife runs an art association putting on a juried (judged by experts) art show. By law, any submitted painting must be an original which means if a painter used a photograph as their model, it cannot be a professionally produced photograph from, say, a magazine or calendar unless the photographer gave the artist permission to recreate the photo as his/her painting.

An artist submitted her painting of a Snow Leopard. Now, it's impossible that she took the photograph herself and when confronted about it, she said it was her own photograph...taken of her TV airing a BBC Planet Earth program. My thinking, is that the BBC would have to provide permission to use their "image" even through it's from a TV show. Technically wouldn't each frame of the film be a copyrighted photograph?

I have an answer that is NOT based in law because I am a photographer, not a lawyer. If I were running the art show this image would not be acceptable. The way that you have described it, there was no technical or artistic skill involved in making the image. Those skills were used by the videographers of Planet Earth. Your criteria should include the word “original” to prevent such nonsense.

I still have two SB800s that I bought years ago when I was shooting my D200. They work perfectly on my D810, D850, and D500. I've seen them available used and recall that I thought the price was pretty reasonable, although I don't any longer remember exactly what it was. The only real disadvantage is that remote control is only via optical interface unless you purchase a separate system. When new, they came with a gadget that allowed use of a fifth AA battery to provide faster recycling.

I also have a pair of SB800 units and find that they are perfect for my needs. The optical remote is great and I use the pop up flash as the trigger. Both units have the 5th battery holder I put the SB800’s on poles and they’re terrific for group portraits events and the like. Very reasonably priced now in the pre-loved market.

I am an amateur photographer with no formal training, so I hope this question is not too basic or simplistic....

I am studying the image information on some of my photos and noticed that the mp data on many photos varies, despite the fact that I am using the same camera...in this case a Canon EOS M5 with 24.1 mp.

Why does this happen? How can I improve or is this not something to be concerned about?

I am including two sunset photos one at 24.1 mp the second at 9.2 mp...why are they so different?

You are confusing “image size” and “file size”. The image size is a physical measure based on the dimensions of your sensor and any resizing that you have done in post processing. The file size is the number of megabytes used for the image. An image that has variations in shades and colours will require more megabytes, but it is not a measure of resolution.

I have an iMac that is used exclusively for my photos. I use LR 6 stand alone and PSE 11. Both of these do everything I need and produce images that are very saleable. I have not upgraded to Catalina or Mojave.

My experience is that an f/2.8 at f/4 will render a better image than an f/4 lens at f/4.

While that is true, I still find it difficult to imagine someone with a DX camera going out to buy a FX lens. My bad.

Interesting perspective. Although I now have a D810, when I was using a D70s, D300 and D300s almost all of my lenses were Nikkor FX. The shortest is a 17-35mm f/2.8. I was able to use my lenses for every situation and when I traded the D300 and the only DX lens I had (16mm-85mm) for a demo D700 I didn’t have to buy any glass. I later bought a used D300s for some additional flexibility Lenses are an investment. And later sold both the D300s and D700 to get a used D810.

What do you mean by “soft” photos?

This lens suffers from an inability to produce well focussed images. It is a common issue with lenses that have a variable aperture. That is a lens where the maximum aperture decreases as the focal length increases. You can tell if the marking on the barrel is something like f/3.5-5.6 They are more money, but I prefer fixed aperture lenses for this reason and generally they are f/2.8. For the kind of work you want the lens for, I’d suggest a Nikkor FX 70-200mm f/2.8 and look at one of the prior versions with VR. Well built, durable and excellent image quality. Good value in the pre-owned market.

Kodak invented digital photography. The first images were black and while and 100pixels x 100pixels. They didn’t think that digital had a future.......
