That is how my camera was set when I got it. And it would get darker when on the beach. Thanks for reply though.

I don't have the A65, but I have the A57 and A99. There is a menu setting, and I forget what the menu item is called that causes the image to see what you are looking at with the lens stopped down to the settings it is going to use, or to leave it wide open and have it stop down as it takes the picture. It sounds like you have this setting set to the setting that allows it to darken the image, which is what it would do on a bright beach scene.

I think that setting is called "Enable Live View" or something close to that.

I found "live view Display" which I was told to turn on. This did not cure my issue with the EVF.

Do you have your EVF set to automatic or manual? And if it's set to automatic like it sounds, then try going to the menu, (Wrench 1) and change the viewfinder brightness to +1.

Also, check your exposure compensation in those bright situations. See if your camera is metering properly.

EVF brightness is not only determined by exposure, but also by the light sensor at the back of the LCD (the small, opaque rectangle in the corner on the edge closest to the hinge assembly). Make sure the sensor isn't covered or dirty.

GOOD LUCK!

Yes the LCD was set to Auto. I now have it set to Manual and +1. I see if this heiips. Thanks all

I have an A77, and I believe it does the same thing. Think of it as looking through the lens while you open and close the aperture. Bigger aperture, more light comes through. Mine does the same thing when I adjust the shutter speed. The camera shows what the effect on the pic will be.

I tried to adjust the aperture but the EVF does not change. Originally I did not have the camera set to adjust the EVF when I change sittings but the camera still darkens only when I am on the beach. The iso is set to Auto. Maybe the iso the camera chooses is too high?

I see shutter count mentioned in many different topics. There is even software to track it. All this implies there is a point when the camera is going to go belly up due to usage. Never worried about this subject when I shot film. Is it something that requires monitoring or something just to know?

Its no biggy for me. Some pro have 167,000 shots on her Canon 5D Mrk II

I know if anyone can help me it will be you folks here.

My parents were so kind and purchased two different lenses for me after my trip to visit them. I'm sure they just went to a photography store and asked someone what might be good.

I now am the proud owner of a Tamron 10-24 and a Nikon 55-300.

I wanted to have a more of a telephoto lens with more reach because currently I just have an 18-140. But my parents said the 500mm lens was about the same as two lenses and they felt this would give me "more options" (lol)

Now, I'm worried, I'm not quite even sure what to do with the wide angle lens. I've watched some videos but being a beginner, I wonder if this won't just get set aside for quite some time.

Any suggestions on how to practice using that wide angle? I did take some pics the other day with a bicycle that had a flower basket on it and thought... hmmm a wide angle might make some interesting shots here but I didn't have my gift from my parents then (lol)

I take it you have crop sensor Nikon? You have loving parents. I would play around with the lens. Try the wide angle lens for landscapes.

I bought an A65 on Ebay over a year ago and it work good. Except when take it to beach, EVF darkens. Off the beach, the EVF is fine. When in a dimly lighted room, the EVF lightens like someone turn on a light. Is this normal for cameras with an EVF.

It would be fun to chime in and let us know what camera you use.

This is not a thread for arguing about what is better or throwing stones! not what lens you use, just what Brand camera you use....{you don't even have to say what model camera it is, unless you want to}

2 Nikon's for me
1 Olympus P&S

Sony A65 and Sony A230

I'm in a PS-12 class and must practice, I need to download PS-12 on a laptop today. In the near future I will buy a better computer for photographs and PS. Can I transfer PS to that new computer and can a get a computer to fit my needs for $1000.00? I have an Epson 3880.

Hi Hollars,
Yes you can buy a desktop or laptop for that amount. I would think for less. Look at one with Intel i5 processer or higher, 8 gig memory, separate video card w/256 or more of memory, 500 gig hard drive. This would be Window PC. Macs are a lot higher in price but very good.

I need some help everyone. I am a novice to taking photo and have a very limited basic knowledge on cameras. I have a RCA 1.5mp digital point and shoot camera that was purchased back around December 2000 from Radio Shack. I am still using it and not having any problems with it. It does eat batteries very quickly, so I only use where I can plug it in to a power source.

2 weeks ago a friend of mine got married and let me use his Nikon to take photo of his small wedding. I took about 65 pictures and I have finally decided to go ahead and but a "real" camera. I have kind of narrowed the choice down.

I am NOT looking to start the Canon / Nikon war up again. I am looking at the Canon T5i or the Nikon D5300. I do not know if I will be taking much video at all.

I am willing to look at used also. I have been looking on Craig's list for Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I am thinking maybe buy an older camera in good shape and learn to use it before buying a newer camera.

I found an older Canon for $75 dollars. Here is a link to the ad.

Welcome to forum Ken
You can not go wrong with eight one of the camera you mentioned. You can get a Nikon D5200 with 2 lens for $75o on eBay. Or you can try B&H.com or KEH or Adorama for a refurbished camera or new.

It's possible that an inexperienced poster does not immediately see how convoluted even a simple request might be. They think that their simple request will quickly yield a simple and concise answer that they can then simply take to the store.
Maybe they are not ready for the barrage of suggestions, if not almost commands, hardly suggesting but indeed telling them what to get.
It could possibly be a little overwhelming.
I've said many times, when a person says they have an entry level crop cam and they want to go FF, that they've earned the right to spend what theyve work long and hard for.
But that's a very different request than the person that comes on and says the have a P&S and want to go DSLR, and ask what they should get.
Some people are asking for help, and simply dont know. Others are begging for us to spend their money.
We have not even mentioned DSLR's, mirrorless, bridge etc.
Because we have chosen it best for us, why will it be best for everybody?
These request will come in, day in and day out.
I'm often surprised at how quickly $2k-$3k cameras gets recommended, along with lenses, when a person merely says they want to move up from entry-level. ;-)

Sharpshooter, I see were you are coming from. It's hard to gave an answer not really knowing the OP. We can ask what type images would they like to take or think of taking. Then give a few choices in equipment. In your case, it would Canon because you know Canon the most. While another Hog would suggest a camera line they know of the most. It all comes down to the OP going and holding the body. They need to look at the liens choices and price. When I look at the prices of the glass, I need to examine what I really need.
All we Hoggers need to do is to give choices and why. Then again if an OP has the money to spare, the OP could start with FF camera. Granted the FF might be longer to get good at were as a crop would be easier to master.
