I need some help everyone. I am a novice to taking photo and have a very limited basic knowledge on cameras. I have a RCA 1.5mp digital point and shoot camera that was purchased back around December 2000 from Radio Shack. I am still using it and not having any problems with it. It does eat batteries very quickly, so I only use where I can plug it in to a power source.

2 weeks ago a friend of mine got married and let me use his Nikon to take photo of his small wedding. I took about 65 pictures and I have finally decided to go ahead and but a "real" camera. I have kind of narrowed the choice down.

I am NOT looking to start the Canon / Nikon war up again. I am looking at the Canon T5i or the Nikon D5300. I do not know if I will be taking much video at all.

I am willing to look at used also. I have been looking on Craig's list for Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I am thinking maybe buy an older camera in good shape and learn to use it before buying a newer camera.

I found an older Canon for $75 dollars. Here is a link to the ad.

Thanks Ken

I Know nothing about Canon, but I have 2 family members
that have the 5300 and love it.

I have a 3100 and a 7100 and love them both very much.

Good luck on your quest for a camera replacement.
Knowing what your using now I think you will be happy
with any of the above mentioned cameras. They are leaps
and bounds ahead of what your used to.

Ken, welcome to the Hog.
That looks like a pretty old camera.
If you want o go very inexpensive, I'd look at a Canon 20d($200)-50d($400) or in between. The rebels are nice cameras, many here use them.
The Nikons are good as well, as are all other brands, but canon is by far the biggest DSLR seller in the world.
Craig's List is good, especially in a populous area. And Canon has the MOST used cameras and lenses for sale on CL.
Again, welcome, I'll check in later.

If the 300D is all you can afford, go for it. BUT I'd be a bit concerned about;
1. Getting it off Craigs List (it might not work at all)
2. Availability of batteries for the camera
3. Availability of 25 MB cards (haven't seen any of those in a couple of years, The smallest I see around is 4 gig).
4. Someone to repair it should it be needed.

In short, I feel the camera is outdated and is more suited for a collector.

Welcome to forum Ken
You can not go wrong with eight one of the camera you mentioned. You can get a Nikon D5200 with 2 lens for $75o on eBay. Or you can try B&H.com or KEH or Adorama for a refurbished camera or new.

I just saw on UHH earlier today that Kmart is selling the Canon T3 for under $300 right now. Also, B&H, in NYC, has an excellent reputation. Here are some of their used SLR's:

I own the Canon T3i, had the Rebel XT before that. Love the cameras. If you get a chance to handle the cameras, whichever way you go, do so. You want it to be comfortable in your hands :)

Thanks for all of your replies. I talked to the guy over the phone. He said that he bought it brand new about 3 years ago. He said that everything works on the camera.

I had not thought about maybe needing new batteries or a replacement data card.

This would only be a starting point to see if I want to take the plunge into this. I would use this camera to get used to taking photo and learning. Then next year, with my income tax return, I was planning on upgrading to a newer or brand new higher end camera like the T5i or the D5300.

You could call Canon customer service about batteries, but it appears there are some for sale on amazon.com that are advertised for this camera, along with CF cards.

Here is the user manual for the 300D:

Maybe you could talk to FarNorth and come to an agreement that works for both of you?

The D90 is a very capable camera and has no need for lenses with a focus motor built into the lens.
It is a step up the ladder from a D5300 but in the previous generation.
I think it would be perfect for you.

Right now you can get a refurb Canon Rebel T3 with an 18-55 lens from Canon Direct for $360.

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/cameras/refurbished-eos-digital-slr-cameras/eos-rebel-t3-black-ef-s-18-55mm-is-ii-lens-kit-refurbished

Or upgrade to the T3i with the same lens for $480.

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/cameras/refurbished-eos-digital-slr-cameras/eos-rebel-t3i-ef-s-18-55mm-is-ii-lens-kit-refurbished

Both come with a one year warranty and free shipping.

You can't beat these deals with a stick.

Swamp Gator: Thanks for the links. This camera would be a cheap stepping stone (and used as a learning tool) to find out if I want to really get into this. The updated and higher end camera will probably be next year.

I am looking at this camera because of the price. Right now I can not afford anything else.

I looked up the 300D on dpreview. It came out in 2003. I don't know how this guy could have bought it new 3 years ago. I wouldn't trust this guy and I wouldn't touch the camera.

Go to keh.com. They are the best for used camera gear. They are honest, reliable, and they have a return policy and give a warranty. Check what they have in Nikon and Canon DSLR's. You can even call them and discuss your needs and budget.

If your budget is that limited, and you're looking for a starter camera you can start with a much less expensive used bridge camera. I just checked keh.com and found a Canon Powershot SX10 bridge camera in Ex condition for $89. I had one several years ago and my sister-in-law still uses one, and it's still pretty good. It also uses AA batteries so there's no issue with old batteries. If you get a good DSLR in the future you can still use the SX10 when you want a long telephoto lens or as a back-up.

If you get to try it out, send in a photo to this link
and you will know how many photo's have been taken
with it. I have only had my 7100 for six months and I
have over 20,000 on it already.
