Sony A65 EVF darkens

I bought an A65 on Ebay over a year ago and it work good. Except when take it to beach, EVF darkens. Off the beach, the EVF is fine. When in a dimly lighted room, the EVF lightens like someone turn on a light. Is this normal for cameras with an EVF.

I have an A77, and I believe it does the same thing. Think of it as looking through the lens while you open and close the aperture. Bigger aperture, more light comes through. Mine does the same thing when I adjust the shutter speed. The camera shows what the effect on the pic will be.

I tried to adjust the aperture but the EVF does not change. Originally I did not have the camera set to adjust the EVF when I change sittings but the camera still darkens only when I am on the beach. The iso is set to Auto. Maybe the iso the camera chooses is too high?

I just tried out my camera. In auto mode the camera varies shutter speed, aperture and ISO to whatever the light meter tells it to give the proper exposure. The EVF darkens or lightens only slightly when going light to dark or vice versa (lots of noise in a dark room, though). If you use a mode other than manual, i.e. program or shutter priority and adjust the dials the difference will be immediate. I switch between manual, program, auto etc based on what I'm trying to accomplish (being lazy or creative) I probably should shoot RAW more frequently...I'd probably get better outcomes more often.

Do you have your EVF set to automatic or manual? And if it's set to automatic like it sounds, then try going to the menu, (Wrench 1) and change the viewfinder brightness to +1.

Also, check your exposure compensation in those bright situations. See if your camera is metering properly.

EVF brightness is not only determined by exposure, but also by the light sensor at the back of the LCD (the small, opaque rectangle in the corner on the edge closest to the hinge assembly). Make sure the sensor isn't covered or dirty.

GOOD LUCK!

I don't have the A65, but I have the A57 and A99. There is a menu setting, and I forget what the menu item is called that causes the image to see what you are looking at with the lens stopped down to the settings it is going to use, or to leave it wide open and have it stop down as it takes the picture. It sounds like you have this setting set to the setting that allows it to darken the image, which is what it would do on a bright beach scene.

I think that setting is called "Enable Live View" or something close to that.

I'd like to get an A99. How do you like it? I have to pay for a trip first before I can think about a new body...they'd cost about the same. Two of my three lenses are FF in anticipation of the upgrade.

Its a great camera. If I were to buy it now, I would have to think about the Sony A7ii vs the A99. It seems to do everything really well. Focus is fast and accurate. Noise is low. It is easy to use. Many settings are in common with the A57 I have so there is not much confusion there. It takes great pictures.

Yes, but you can adjust it through the menu to an extent.

I found "live view Display" which I was told to turn on. This did not cure my issue with the EVF.

i think the menu item you want is effects to on. If you need to shoot with flash then turn effects to off so you can see your subject.
