I'm in a PS-12 class and must practice, I need to download PS-12 on a laptop today. In the near future I will buy a better computer for photographs and PS. Can I transfer PS to that new computer and can a get a computer to fit my needs for $1000.00? I have an Epson 3880.

Hi Hollars,
Yes you can buy a desktop or laptop for that amount. I would think for less. Look at one with Intel i5 processer or higher, 8 gig memory, separate video card w/256 or more of memory, 500 gig hard drive. This would be Window PC. Macs are a lot higher in price but very good.

I Have sold photos many years ago, I am learning PS and have 1000s of photos of which a few hundred are promising with little work needed. Can you point me in the right direction as far as pixel count on screen, memory, etc

I would second Dan O's post, but add an external drive or two for backing up.

I find 2 inbuilt hard drives are better than one, the first drive for programs and the 2nd for data (images etc.)
Mine are both 500GB, but I also have 2 x 1TB externals to store images for infrequent access.

The i5 motherboard has built in graphics, but if you can include a dedicated graphics card with its own 1 or 2 GB of memory, graphic manipulation will be faster.

I am out of touch with monitors, I use 2 x 21" hi-res Benq screens, they are not the best available but they are reliable and not too pricy.

With this set up I have about 100,000 tiff files and 7000 raw files and probably about 5000 layered Photoshop files, with room for some more.

The total cost of my system was about £1500 ($2000?) so I am confident that $1000 will buy you a system that can be expanded over time as required).

If when you are looking for the new machine and you spot an affordable with the i7 chipset, even better.

Check out Cosco if you have one in your area or go on line and look at their bargains. They have a sale on until the 28th. and you can use it for 90 days and return if you don't like it. I am lucky as I have a store near me. I buy on line and if I don't like it return to the local store without any problems.

Look at the Toshiba P75 series. 17" screen etc. Then add A Western Digital 2 T "the Book" and your set to go.
