Hi,
WinZip before sending always works without affecting the image and handles large files of any kind. I haven't had any problems sending any thing anywhere.

I will look WinZip up it sounds useful.

I regularly send large video files and photos to friends via Dropbox even though they do not necessarily have a Dropbox account. The way to do it is by sending your family/friends a direct link to where the photos, in your case, are stored in your account on the Dropbox server out there in "the cloud". This means that the photos are downloaded from the server (wherever that is located) to your family and friends computer(s) when they click on the link you send them via normal email. I copy the link ( Ctrl-C ) and paste it into the email I am composing (Ctrl-V).

If I'm sending a number of photos or video to the one person, I create a folder, suitable named to distinguish it from others, in which to store them in my local Dropbox folder which resides on my computer. All the files I want to share are then placed into that folder. Dropbox will replicate what I have done on my local Dropbox to my account on Dropbox's server out there somewhere.

So the upshot of this approach is that the third parties download your folder with contains all the files from the Dropbox server. How fast the downloading occurs is a matter for your family/friends internet connection and has nothing to do with your internet connection other than you getting the folder and contents uploaded to the server in the first place. This uploading happens once only plus any time you make changes to the contents of the folder.

The Dropbox help files should give you a suitable guide on how to create a link to your folder. Setting up the link is done through your account on the Dropbox server.

Thank you so much everyone who has contributed very valid answers to my questions.

Due to all of your imput I have now remedied the situation and I couldn't have done it without all of you who helped.

I finally exported the files onto (the edited version) my desktop and from there sent them via WeTransfer and Dropbox to give my daughter the option of where she wanted to get them and edit them herself further for her own book. The raw files would not export as they were just too big and my internet too slow.

I wanted to do some minor editing before sending them so she could then see what further adjustments were needed of her own. She is not a photographer but she is good on a Mac, I can also help her achieve what and how she wants to see her finished book.

Thank you all once again. Linda

You should consider the details of this post Recommended resizing parameters for digital images

By sending lower resolution files, you save yourself significant time when sending the image files to a share-site and you save your family significant time during the download, while sharing digital images that are visually equivalent when viewed on a computer. The post includes multiple screen-captures of popular editing software, where hopefully your reference to "export" applies to one of the edit software shown.

I am going to look at that post immediately, I need to get my act together on this one otherwise I will be falling alseep over the Mac. Thank you so much for the suggestion. LInda

Linda, what program are you using to edit and export your files? What format are you exporting them in, JPEG, PSD, or ...? Lastly what speed internet connection do you have? With these answers we can give you more accurate help.

Dropbox does not convert images. If they are getting unprocessed files at the other end, then you probably put your unprocessed files in your Dropbox folder. Does your daughter have Dropbox on her computer? Are you sharing a specific folder, or are you using a specific folder inside of the Photos folder and sharing that? Either way, what she sees at her end will be exactly what you put in at your end.

When I share images by dropbox - and I do this at least several times a week - sometimes as many as 400 or 500 files - I encourage to install Dropbox on their end. I then create a folder with their name and my name on it in my Dropbox folder, and invite them to share that folder through Dropbox. Then whenever I put anything in that folder Dropbox will sync up with that folder on the destination computer.

The speed of connection on my end is pretty fast, and usually it's at least 100 mbps at the other end. Naturally, if you have a slow connection, say 15 mbps it will take longer. If you both have slow connections, then it will take longer to upload AND download. WeTransfer or any other similar program is not going to solve a slow connection issue.

You could downsample your images to 2048x1280 which will give you files that are between 1 and 2 mb in size, and those will transfer very quickly.

Thank you for replying - I think what I have done wrong is - I edited all the photos in the develop mode and then I dragged and dropped then into our shared folder from there instead of exporting them, this was yesterday and by 9.00 this morning only a few had gone over, but when I checked the files had reverted back to the original as if I hadn't edited them, so frustrating. I checked a few of the photos and realised that they were all originals.

What I have done now is I have exported all of the files into a folder as Jpegs onto my desktop and as I type, and it has taken forever, I have used WeTransfer, I am doing about 14 at a time but they are successfully arriving at the destination.

You live and learn but I should have resized them to a smaller file size.

What I don't understand (I have never used WeTransfer before) is when they are received at the other end can anything be done with the photos and how are they received and can they be edited.

What we are both trying to do is my daughter and granddaughter want to create their own book of our trip to India and I will use Blurb to create my own at this end.

Thank you so much for trying to help me, it is really appreciated. Regards Linda

Hi Hogs I have tried to send a number of large files via dropbox, I put a lot of time and energy in the editing process so that my daughter and granddaughter could see the edited files, the files are not only taking forever, they are also the unedited versions that are trying to export.

Can anyone help me regarding how to send the edited versions. Thank you.

I recently returned from India and created a folder called India 2019 in L/R, which was in Folders on the left hand side of the screen.

I tried to import from my CF card but the message kept coming up Disk Full

I did all that I could to get some space back, turned the Mac off and restarted it.

The pics that woldn't import because of the disk problem suddenly appeared in the Develop module for the some reason,

The folder India 2019 has disappeared altogether, the pics now appear in the Previous Import folder and in
All Pictures!! Can I create a new folder called India 2019, plus drag and drop them from the All Pictures folder, I have searched everywhere for the first India2019 folder but it jas simpluy vanished.

Also (thanks Hogs) how do I get Documents, which seems to be the one screwing up the Mac, onto my external hardrive. Thank you. Linda

A few years ago I purchased the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 lens at great cost, I also purchased at the same time a filter, I jumped out of the car and stood on the running board to catch a shot that I had seen of a red deer but I failed to mount the lens in my haste) correctly and from a great height of about 8 feet or so it fell off, my brand new lens, it fell straight into an iced over puddle on a concrete path, the friends I was with at the time were just as mortified as myself, I thought all was lost but the lens hood was broken and so was the filter (smashed to smithereens in fact) but the combination of the two items and my prayers saved all of it, lens intact, I did send it back to Nikon as I thought the mounting pins might be damaged, it did cost be 200.00 pounds, moral of the story is I now buy good quality filters for every lens and MAKE SURE I mount it properly.

Over the years I have read a number of pros and cons on this site regarding the use of UV filters for lens protection. Personally, I have always used one, and never gave it much thought. A couple of weeks ago when I was unloading my car for my granddaughter's birthday, my camera bag fell out of the back of my SUV. My lens was attached to my camera. The lens cap broke, and the UV filter was smashed to bits. However, the lens was completely in tact, with absolutely no damage! And, no damage to the camera (which had nothing to do with the filter). Lucky me! I immediately bought a replacement UV filter!

Lentils are light and you can buy them in any supermarket and use a large make-up bag or something similar zipped together at the top or sewn

I live in England near Lincoln city, I would also like to meet other hogs for general chit chat on photography. It is sometimes nice to meet a person who writes words but you cannot visulise but only imagine what they are like etc.

It would be great to meet up with other Hogs here in Houston, but in the mean time you might want to look at meetup.com. There is a photography section where local groups post a schedule for meetings or shoots.

Hi Hogs

I am going to Bandipur in India in February on a safari - has anyone been to this area to shoot wildlife etc - this is my first safari, I have a Nikon D810 - lenses - Sigma 150-500 5.6-6.3, Nikkor F2.8 70-200, Nikkor 50mm F1.4, 24-70 F2.8 Sigma, Nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6.
Fuji XT2 - lenses 18-55, 35mm F2.8, 50-140 F2.8 with tc 1.4, 50-230 F4.5-6.7.

I know there are weight restrictions and do not want to take anything that is unnecessary - any help would be appreciated. I have have various filters and pieces I can also take. I always take far too much and have to carry it all, frightened that I might MISS THE SHOT.

Thank you

Have had the 810 since it was born so to speak. Love it, there will always be newer and newer models, thats how Nikon stay in business of course, but if this is the last camera you purchase I am sure you will be delighted with it.
