I appreciate the difference between snapshots and planned and staged portraits. The term that "bugs" me the most is "grab shot", and I hear it frequently used disparagingly by judges of our Camera Club monthly contests which most often call for a specific type or subject photo.

They are supposed to be judging the photo itself, but not the conditions under which they think it was taken. Good photos can be grabbed because they are taken in a fleeting moment of time. To wait for the perfect sun angle or camera position is to miss the picture.

My rant for the day!

The BIG expense that I haven't seen mentioned is or will be Health Insurance. If photography is the main source of income, it certainly has to be included, but if some other "day job" is paying that cost, then it can be excluded, but, health, even with insurance, has a cost.

So is this a good argument for NOT turning Off the Image Stabilization or Vibration Reduction, whichever your camera manufacturer calls it, when shooting from a tripod as most of the books say to do?

Thanks Bersharbp,

I guess I'll just have to abandon the old catalog after making jpeg copies on new DVD's, and start over building a new catalog on the new computer, but it sure seems like a lot of extra (and unnecessary) time consuming work.

Another option might be to uninstall PSE10 from the new computer and re-install it. When I first installed PSE10 on the old computer it went into the files and imported the pictures without being told. Now that the all the pictures are in the new Windows Pictures file, it might do that again ???

I've been using PSE10 for about 18 months and like it, but now I have a problem. HELP! My old computer is in the process of dying so I bought a new one and unfortunately WIN8 was my only option :( . I made a catalog backup of the Catalog on three DVD's, and installed PSE10 on the new computer, but when I try to Restore the catalog with the old file structure, it just dumps everything into the Organizer's Media Browser File by date and ignores the file structure. I eventually found the file structure in the Windows picture file, but how do I get it into the Organizer?

I'm afraid that if I delete the pictures in the Browser, I'll also lose them from the Windows Pictures folder.

(ed. comment): I hate Win8, and I'm not new to Windows; I started with Win3.1.

Any help would be apreciated.

The situation has been stated several times & is understood. Get over it!

We can swap insults for weeks and no one will learn anything; this forum is supposed to be Helpful and Instructional; let's get back to that!

If you are not a "computer weenie" avoid Win8 at all costs! I had to replace my old computer running Vista Home Basic (and never had any problem with it) with a Win8 system and I HATE THE DAMN WIN8! I'm not a "weenie" either, but I don't consider myself "Windows Illiterate" as I've been using Windows since v3.1

I'm using PSE10 so it shouldn't have been a problem. I installed PSE10 on the new computer, made a back up of the old catalog using PSE10 and the new computer won't recognize the file type. I then bought a Data Transfer Cable, and with both computers running the file transfer program, the new computer "can't find" the Easy Transfer program on the old computer. Unfortunately, the soon to be released Win8.1 doesn't seem as if it will be much better although it may bring back the old Start Menu". It may also have a price tag attached so we will pay and suffer for Microsoft's screw-ups.

Not Happy

I need a new printer-- my Epson C88+ died after 7 years :( , and I thought it would be nice to have one that could print wide format if it didn't cost a small fortune. This seems to fit the bill.

Has anyone her had any experience, good or bad, with this printer? :

It, but has been a loooong time since we did any B&W processing and we had both the plastic and Stainless developing containers--I'd hesitate to call them tanks. The Stainless were much easier to use although I don't remember any significant difference in the results.

I believe there were several different Kodak cameras having the "Brownie" label. I seem to recall my first brownie using 127 film. That camera measured about 4" x3"x 3" front to back, but the larger Brownies used a larger roll film.

Can you perhaps get the info from Kodak's website, or someone else may be maintaining a history on line.

Have those great photos been "shopped" or are they fresh out of camera as taken? If the latter, your getting a lot better zoom results than I can get our of my Nikon P-500!

Lori,

I'm not really new to photography, but in 2011 I decided I needed to upgrade from a Canon 2000 pocket camera to something more versatile. I take a lot of pictures on the water when both my boat and the subject are often both moving, and got tired of the camera taking too long "to think" after I pressed the shutter button. After I read all the reviews I could find I decided the SX40 was the way to go; unfortunately I couldn't find one and ended up with my first Nikon, a P-500 P&S, and to say I'm unhappy would be putting it mildly.

I also photograph "back yard critters" & have been very unhappy with the Auto Focus. Even with the spot focus, you can't tell exactly where it is focusing, and it frequently focuses on the background rather than the bird. When I print the photos , the subjects on 4x6's are fine & 8x10's are less sharp; for larger prints or projected pictures, the out of focus is painfully evident.

With your "Limited Budget" and I tried to limit mine too, I'm not sure what the answer of what camera might be, but talk to friends or ask at a local camera club, but for what you want the P-500 isn't. The new 510 may be better, but you never know until you try it.

Good luck!
