Though visually striking, there is something visually confusing about this photograph.

I've flown into and out of Love Field Prescott, AZ (KPRC) more times that I can count ... this is not KPRC Prescott. There are no mountains like the ones shown in the photograph anywhere [that] close to the airport, nor are there rising grassy fields close to either departing runways. The field sits out in the middle of a tremendous flat, and there are no power lines and poles anywhere next to any of the two runways. And, yes there is something else confusing about this photograph ... any takers?

Have been watching this string of replies to the post by, Streets. Sorry to burst everyone's delusions about the "Contrails" BS lies that we are fed ... but, Streets has it right. Chemtrails are real. Anyone doubting this is completely brainwashed. And, as Streets stated ... you and I are breathing this crap!

Hi all,

I'd like your thoughts on this please.

I've been struggling to attach my P1000 to my tripod ...

Paul. :)

Paul, that's what they make camera straps for! I never attach or detach any camera without the camera strap around my neck. Camera straps have saved me some repair bucks and a few damaged cameras.

Every time I see a photographer using a camera absent a camera strap, or not around their necks, I just want to smack them up the side of the head.

Bill...thank you so much for the info and suggestions....

Do you have the single point centered or off slightly to one side?

Centered. I am going to PM you.

Thanks Bill! I do have BBF already set and focus on AF-C but used the Group Focus instead of single, never thought about changing the EV...duh!! I will have to remember that next time. I am starting to get better at panning with the eagles flying...at least this time I was able to keep them in the frame! ! Usually I end up with half a bird in the frame, that's why I kept the focus on the Group instead of single....just not quite there yet to trust myself with the single...lol
Thanks Bill! I do have BBF already set and focus o... (show quote)

Yes, getting half a bird in the frame comes with the territory of bird photography - aggravating. You will, however, be totally amazed at the results using Single Point focus. If you don't believe me yet, just keep shooting Group focus and learning new cuss words.

SP only takes a few shots and a little panning practice to get used to, and you will be amazed at the keeper rate. I know Steve Perry endorses Group Focus, but he also uses SP too and puts it right on the eyeball. Group is wonderful for stationary subjects. An otherwise perfectly focused eagle without that icon glaring eyeball and pupil in focus is a reject for the trash bin.

Also ... forgot to mention ... use a tripod!!! Handheld VR isn't all it's cracked up to be. I never, never go eagle shooting without my tripod. Never. The tripod alone will vastly improve the keeper rate.

If you don't have one, get one. At first you'll cuss it, then suddenly you'll fall in love with it. If you can afford it, get a Gimbal type head. I shoot with a Manfrotto 393 attached to a Manfrotto 055 tripod. The 393 can be had for a fraction of what the Wimberley sells for, and it works as well, or better. Fancy gear with fancy prices doesn't take good photographs.

I suspect you're riding your horses into that nesting area. Fashion a scabbard to carry the tripod.

I've offered my suggestions to you Cindy because I believe you are sincere about learning techniques to become a better photographer. I took one look at your photographs and immediately knew what was lacking and needed.

Hey, here's a little tip on panning those birds. It's like shooting Trap with a shotgun. Keep BOTH eyes open, pan slightly ahead of the bird and when you see its head poke into the frame, start firing. I fashioned a little red fiber optic sight onto the top of the sunshade with super glue - Two-way tape works. Flush mount. Works like a charm.

Hi Bill, No insult taken as I wondered if I'd get this question. It was the most amazing sunrise I'd ever seen and would only be ruined with PhotoShop or anything else. I'm sending you the original ...

Hi John, you are a man of honesty & integrity ... and quite a photographer. I do appreciate your answering and attaching the original for review. I find this photograph just as stunning as the original attachment.

Here's my honest take on PP software; aimed specifically at those here on UHH that can't seem to get thru life without further totally screwing up a photograph ... that was screwed up to begin with! The legend John Shaw summed up Photoshop. "Photoshop doesn't make a bad picture good; it makes a bad picture big." Anyone here on UHH who doesn't know who John Shaw is, Goggle him. It might make the photography world a better place in which to live; unless one is a hopeless, 'computer photographer.'

I have Photoshop 7.0 and here is why: PS is a necessary tool that proficiently runs my Epson Styplus Pro 4800 printer, which is used to print photos for clients. This software was purchased back in 2005 to better serve clientele for the aerial photo business - i.e. removing unsightly refuse and junk cars, et.al. from photographs. To correct uneven horizons caused by the turning and banking of the aircraft. And, to adjust EV stops if necessary. To re-shoot aerial images is cost prohibitive on both ends of the photographer/client spectrum, and out of the question.

John, if I would have taken that sunrise photo of yours, I'd have done the exact same thing to it as you did. Don't know your plans for this photo, but if it were mine it would be matted and framed for all to see, and it would get marketed.

Again, thanks for replying and sharing.

Bill

Cindy, set your D500 to AF-C mode, and Single Point focus. Put that focus point right on the eye ball. Set the frame rate to CH and shoot that camera like a machine gun.

[Absolutely] change the focus setting to Back Button Auto Focus (BBF) and get the focus off of that damned shutter release. I won't live without BBF.

Here's a shot I took a few days ago ... 1/5000s @ f/7.1 ISO 1600 +0.7 EV bracketing. if you use the settings suggested you'll nail them, get some wall hangers, and you won't need PS Lightroom.

As for the Montana sunshine - or lack thereof - it makes for shooting flying eagles challenging. My D810 lives on +0.7 EV in normal sunshine and +1.0 EV on overcast days.

Nice set of eagle shots though ... keep shooting.

Yep, the rubber band trick. I have a wide, pretty purple one that came on a head of romaine. Works just fine. Zooms creep, whether pointing up or down.

Chief, these photos make me homesick. Was raised in this country from the age of six months. First graduating class of KOFA High School. I spy Castle Dome Mountain and a hill that we called, Texas Hill - old stomping grounds. The King of Arizona mine - KofA - was actually known for producing vast fortunes in gold in addition to copper.

Hiked into this remote Bald Eagle's nest today. Thought it strange that the female wasn't in the nest, as usual, sitting on her eggs which she laid this past Saturday.

The male (pictured) flew into the nest, dropped off lunch for the Mrs., popped his head over the edge, gave me a stern look, and then flew out. Spent several hours waiting for the female to fly in and get lunch, but she never showed. After getting home and viewing the images .... Ha, there she was! She was in the nest the whole time. Can you spot her?
