Quick extension: Planning a week in Grand Teton NP and a week in Yellowstone National Park in AUGUST. Any estimates of crowd sizes at that time? Thanks hoggers!

It is my understanding as a Certified Forensic Photographer that “macro” lenses are also corrected for flatness of field. For whatever it’s worth, but my determination has never once been challenged further in Court. Best regards to all hoggers.

Don’t do it. Hotel safes are the first things breached by a perpetrator. It is often one of the many hotel employees that has access to all locks in the building. For example, I have direct knowledge that a meeting from a conference room was hit during a short lunch break. All computers, valuables, purses were gone and the credit cards were already maxed out by the time they returned.

With the 24-105, you can capture images of people or groups “close up” with, hopefully, some bokeh or, at least, a less distracting blurry background while retaining the ability for some wide angle shots if desired.

Your fun challenge will be to have a clear subject on each image without the distraction of other guests in the picture. Try getting a bit low and shooting SLIGHTLY up to shoot over the heads of unwanted distractions. It’s the way I train police officers to use deadly force with an active threat in a crowd. Get down, shoot up. You miss the bystanders, stop the threat.

Note that your light source does not necessarily have to be low as well, if you have the ability to pull it off.

IMHO as always. Have a great time!

JohnST1001:
Thanks for the outstanding idea. My camera (D850) continues to be bottlenecked on high-speed bursts by what, should be, the fastest cards out there. Buffer fills, then camera slows to a crawl of about 4fps.

I have deleted my subscription to jchristina. The totality of the circumstances indicates that this is the right move. Thanks, hoggers!

Look for those fuzzy, rolled black blankets found everywhere for $1.99 (Found mine at Walmart, got the queen sized)

Been a professional for 45 years and my daughter is just starting out. Bought her the D3500 package and she is doing some awesome (ok, bias admitted) work. Haven’t looked back. BTW - the Nikon case with the package (B&H) is surprisingly nice as an added bonus.

I own and use daily the Nikon 28-70 f2.8. Mine continues to function flawlessly and is in condition 10. I am using it mainly on the D850 and it easily rises to the level of quality of the camera body.

True, it has no VR but with good technique and the proper camera settings already mentioned in other posts this is never a drawback. I have never used VR as an excuse for poor technique. I do not know the ins and outs of "screw drive" as mentioned by another Hogger. All I can say is that, in the "real" world, the lens is fast to focus and responsive.

I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Enjoy!

Sir:

Rent a four wheel drive at Moab off-road and contact Dan Micks. He is a personal 4X4 tour guide. He will escort you along some old mining roads for about $150 per 1/2 day. He knows ALL the spots outside the normal tourist stops for Photographers. If you can, explore the White Rim Trail, but get your permit now. It follows the Colorado River (foreground ) and has many stunning midgrounds (rock formations, and hopefully beautiful skies. It is rated “easy” for a backroad level of travel. You can do this.

The White Rim Trail is a FULL day’s travel but, since you have a permit, you must sign out at the end with the rangers or they will come looking for you almost immediately. You are isolated but safe. Just stay hydrated and take extra water and take PHOTOGRAPHS!

They do not stand up to heat very well at all. I put a brand new set of Duracell batteries in two walk-in talkies and left them in the car (not in the sun) for two hours. The batteries expanded and corroded and ruined the devices completely.
