I am thinking about buying this lens and would like some feedback from the group. It is listed in good condition.

I currently have the 18-140 and 18-300 plus a 35 1.8 lens.

Would I see any improvement in IQ, especially in family settings during holiday and other events inside and out. It is my understanding that it is an fix lens and should improve my IQ.

And what is a good price for this lens

Thanks for any advice you can give on this lens.

If you mean the AF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5D, I have that lens and it is pretty good. The zoom is kind of weird though, it's fully extended at 28mm and retracts as you zoom out to 50mm then it extends again as you go from 50mm to 70mm.
You might be happier with the AF 35-70mm f/2.8D.
Prices ebb and flow. Check on KEH, their prices are good and their ratings are spot on.

I think the OP means the f2.8, a magnificent piece of glass, I too want one, one of the original trinity, someone please answer the question, “Would you notice...?”

It is a very sharp lens. You will like it, folks who have it swear by it. However, it is a D lens, which means if you want to go Nikon mirrorless at some point, this lens will not auto focus on the Z camera's.
I would look at a used 24-70 2.8 for longevity.

I had one...loved it , really sharp and good colors but it is very heavy and it’s the old screw drive. Mine squeaked a lot when focusing (a common problem). Some say the squeaking is a sign of impending death, Nikon service told me not to worry about it. Lots of controversy on that issue. Also Nikon may no longer service this lens. Check KEH for prices

A bit off subject. I just moved to a d810 from a d7200. I could not afford the Nikkor version of the 24-70 2.8 lens, so I opted for the Tamron G2 version and love it. The vibration compensation is fantastic. I know a lot of people prefer not to use third party equipment but I don't have that kind of budget for the name brand. Dxo also gave the Tamron G2 edition high marks.

First thing first, I have never used the 28-70 f2.8 by Nikon but I am pretty familiar with it. It is a great professional lens.
You talked about quality from that lens and the lens will give you all the quality you need IF you do your part. It has no VR so or you raise the ISO speed for a more steady shot or you use a tripod, the latter would be my recommendation.
Understand this is a professional lens of superb quality. I regret I cannot discuss price because I do not really know its market value in the condition it is offered to you.

The lens you are talking about is affectionately nicknamed "The Beast." Yes, it's that heavy, and, while sharp when new, is old optically. If you want to use that FL, then find a good used 24-70, pre VR; you'll be better off.

Thanks for the info. It is being offered on Facebook marketplace for 550. When I see the 24-70 it is over twice that price. Can’t pay that much for a lens now.

From some of the comments I take it that it will not be a good travel lens. I want it mostly for family events and some landscapes.

I have the full frame, non-VR version of this lens and it is wonderful. For family and landscapes, it would work great. Bought mine from Nikon as a refurb, when it was offered for an additional discount. Still was pricey. For travel, the f/4, 24-120 VR Nikon lens (the latest version) would give a bit more versatility. I took mine to Europe last Spring and it did a great job.

I have owned that lens for nearly five years and wouldn’t trade it for any other from any manufacturer. It is a superb piece of glass that has never failed me.

I own and use daily the Nikon 28-70 f2.8. Mine continues to function flawlessly and is in condition 10. I am using it mainly on the D850 and it easily rises to the level of quality of the camera body.

True, it has no VR but with good technique and the proper camera settings already mentioned in other posts this is never a drawback. I have never used VR as an excuse for poor technique. I do not know the ins and outs of "screw drive" as mentioned by another Hogger. All I can say is that, in the "real" world, the lens is fast to focus and responsive.

I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Enjoy!
