TriX is right on. The HGST are by far the most reliable. I used to be a big WD Caviar Black fan but for the last 3 years I use only HGST in my own computers, external drives and NAS. FYI...Backblaze is a clould service that keeps detailed service and failure records of all their storage media they use.

I am a high School math teacher and that is a perfect example of applying Common Core thinking. I refer to it as Common Corpse.

CHG_Canon is right. That 24-70 f2.8 has a unique look. My brother-in-law has the Canon 24-70 f2.8 and his portraits are nothing less than stunning. I believe that it is simply a lens where the whole of the lens became much more than the sum of its parts. It has a sharpness and clarity combined with superb tonality that is Canon at its best. While I am a Pentax shooter I look at that lens with a sincere fondness and a slight bit of GAS.

If it under warranty contact Wasabi. Mine did the same thing and they replaced them promptly.

Another Yahoo for Eneloop. That is all I use in my flash. Love them. They last much longer than alkaline.

I like manual but if not, I use TAV on the Pentax which allows me to control shutter (Time) and aperature while the camera controls ISO. I just keep an eye on the ISO on the top screen. Is just that it is more likely that the ISO range will be acceptable that the shutter (controls motion) or aperture (DoF/Bokeh).

Definitely hit Cade's Cove especially at Sunrise for the colors and late afternoon to early evening as the deer and bears are on the move. Parson's Branch road just past the visitor's center (halfway point on the loop) has a gorgeous stepped cascade/waterfall and I have seen a lot of bears there. Sparks Cut (which allows you to bypass half the loop) has a pretty stream at the hallway point that you can park at and get lovely sunrise pics. Then Tremont and Elkmont are two abandoned logging communities with lots of of old buildings and nice trails. Tremont is especially nice as the Middle Prong Little River runs along the main road to and the main walkway in Tremont...lots of nice cascades and water scenes. Go off the main trail at times and you will find an old 1930's Cadillac and parts of old buildings. As you enter Tremont by the main road you will see the GSM Institute at Tremont Center on the left....there you can get maps. There are several nice trails from very easy to moderately challenging. I would stay clear of Gatlinburg as it is just a tourist trap with the kitsch and quatch and bad traffic. Hwy 321 connects Gatlinburg to Townsend on the west side. 321 then goes west through Walland and then to Maryville. Near Walland is both the Updated Foothills Parkway which is spectacular (its more than spectacular!) north (the new extension) or south (to the Dragon's Tail!). Also near Walland is Tuckaleechee Caverns which is beautiful. In Townsend there are some nice country restaurants (Riverstone and Carriage House Inn are just two of several) . The main road (321 aka Townsend Entrance road) going east enters the park just at the edge of town. It goes a very short way when it tees into the Little Pronge Gorge Road. Left takes you aling the Little River and some nice stop offs and picturest scenes lime Meig Falls, Laurel Falls and the Sinks. If you continue it will take to to the Sugarlands Visitor Center where Little River Gourge road tees into 441 just south of Pigeon Forge and Galinburg. Right takes you to the Tremont entrance (on the left) or continue on to Cades Cove. As you enter Cades cove grab a map at the self-serve center on the left.
In the center of Townsend 321 takes a left (the main road on to the park is now E Lamar Alexander Pkwy which then morphs into Townsend Entrance rd on the east side) and 321 takes you through Wears Valley then to Pigeon Forge.
If you have Google Maps just search for Townsend and start there gojng both left and right. Have fun!

A close friend's wife has asked me for a camera recommendation for his birthday present. She gave me a FIRM budget of $500. She is not opposed to a used item from a reputable dealer. I am currently looking at new and used cameras on B&H because that is where I get most of my gear and I value their service. She really wants to surprise him which puts us both on the spot because buying a camera is a very personal thing.

Here is what I can tell you about him. He's a techie, complexity is not going to be an issue. He's a decent photographer with the gear he has which is a Pentax K-10 with the standard kit lens. He will mostly be taking photos and videos of family vacations and documenting the school and sporting career of his 11-year-old son, who plays both basketball and baseball. He currently leaves his camera behind for a lot of events probably because toting it is a chore.

My main thoughts are:

One, the single and ancient entry-level piece of glass he owns is no reason to stay with a DSLR or a Pentax.

Two, the budget is not going to yield a great camera that will take decent sports photos unless we go with a cheaper APS-C DSLR camera body and a do-it-all wide-telephoto, zoom lens with image stabilization. If I'm wrong, I certainly want to know an alternative.

Three, He's used to a DSLR, so if we go mirrorless, he's going to want a viewfinder.

Four, for a birthday gift it's better to buy new.

So there you have it. Really, really tough call.

Here are five cameras that I'm considering

Panasonic DMC-G7 with a 14-42 lens - misses long distance sports shots but has decent resolution and a great reputation. Maybe a longer lens somewhere down the road.

Olympus OM-D E-10 Mk II - 14-42 lens - a lot like the Panasonic, 5 axis stabilization, good reviews. Again, a long lens later.

Canon EOS-Rebel T6, 18-55, 75-300, with a nice kit, spare battery, case, etc. long lens is most likely crap.

Nikon D3500, 18-55, 70-300, extra battery - again, the long lens is likely crap.

A USED Nikon D5200 for $260 and a new Tamron 18-200 VC for $200, my daughter had one, it's a decent camera and there are a couple of lenses he could borrow from me.

Your thoughts?
A close friend's wife has asked me for a camera re... (show quote)

I am getting my wife the Sony a6000 with a 16-50mm lens. It is down to $498 with a bunch of extras including two 64 GB SD cards and Corel software at Amazon. The superb sensor with an incredible frame rate with 172 focus points make this a great buy for a very light and compact high performance camera. It also shoots great video! While it is a bit dated....it still can hold its own with most of todays cameras and best of alll it is new....not used!

I also have to recommend Red River Paper. I use the Polar Pearl Metalic and the UltraPro Gloss in my Pro100 and use Precision Colors. Love the richness and depth from that trifecta. Red River has a nice sampler pack. The Precision Colors is great but only what you can use in a few months (the 2 oz kits work well).

I teach math and it is not thou shalt not divide by zero...it is thou can't divide by zero (technically it is "undefined"). No one has figured out how many zeros fit into something and there are proofs out there only intesting to weird mathemeticians like me that show why it it is not infinite times. This thread is a great lesson on the etymological domain of reciprocity.

Yes...indeed it is Pecision Colors. Their system is extremely cost effective and their chip resetter works like a charm. I cannot say enough about the print quality that I get with Pecision Colors in my Pro-100. Visit their website and you will be impressed.
