Not seeing any recent posts in my search; and not sure I trust most Google “best.....” results, I will ask the UHH community:

Need to replace a couple external hard drives (both 1TB) as I am running low on space. One is a Seagate and the other is a Western Digital and I have had no problems with either.

Suggestions/Recommendations on 4TB external Hard drives (not SSD). Using for photo backup only.
Thanks!

I usually use WD predominantly, but would be receptive to a Seagate Barracuda drive.

Many of the old towers that I've removed the hard drives from contained Barracudas.
Internal hard drives I've purchased in the past have been WD Caviar or Seagate Barracudas.
I currently have (for a while) two 1Tb WD Passport Ultra external drives and am pleased with them.
Those with higher quality control (more reliable) are usually not the cheaper drives.
I've no experience with 4Tb drives yet.
Toshiba should be good also, at least they used to be.

Two external drive reviews:

Enterprise class WD/HGST ultraStar. If you don’t want to spend the $ for an enterprise quality drive (you should if you can), Google Backblaze drive reliability statistics, and look at their latest data on consumer class HDs.

My tower internal is a 2Tb WD Gold (Enterprise) drive, a year or three old though.

Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba and any Western Digital drive with a 5yr warranty will generally outlast/outperform the $100/4TB class of consumer drive. I would not advise you get a MyBook, Passport or any of those really cheap drives.

The way to go is to get a good quality internal drive and buy a case for it with the interface you need (USB 2, USB3/3.1/C Thunderbolt 2/3 - it takes about 2-3 minutes to install the drive in the case - it's not rocket science.

An SSD for an external drive - could be a bit faster and maybe more reliable, but more expensive.

TriX is right on. The HGST are by far the most reliable. I used to be a big WD Caviar Black fan but for the last 3 years I use only HGST in my own computers, external drives and NAS. FYI...Backblaze is a clould service that keeps detailed service and failure records of all their storage media they use.

Look into a Drobo setup, or similar. Add drives as needed.
