Indeed, Sony shared the technology of the Betamax product to JVC and Matsushita in an early attempt to unify VCR standards. JVC incorporated much of that technology into the VHS system, which was not compatible with Betamax, and therefore became a competitor. Whether Sony "invented" VHS could be, and probably has been, discussed ad infinitum.
I was incorrect, however, to say that Sony enforced a closed system. They did attract several other companies to manufacture Betamax machines, including Sanyo and Pioneer. However, the VHS camp was exceedingly aggressive in enlisting other electronics manufacturers, and as we know now, it won out in the end.
The upshot was that the consumer electronics industry learned not to create situations in which a format war could develop. The audio CD was a joint product that avoided competing formats and proved to be pretty popular.
