No, never had that issue but by the description it sound like it might be the switch which hopefully would not cost that much. Nikon will give you an estimate which you will have to approve.
The thing is, if you don’t get it fixed. It’s not reliable when you need it and worth nothing if you try to sell.
Good luck.

Thanks guess I'll be sending it to Nikon and hoping repair is not too bad.

Thanks been just clicking reply thinking that would work. Too much facebook I guess.

No this is not normal with this lens. With intermittent symptoms such as this always try the quickest and cheapest fixes first...cleans contacts on lens, flip switch from A to M and back to A again (sometimes these switches are hit accidentally in the course of use), turn camera off, dismount and remount lens again, firmware check - make sure up to date on both camera and lens. If all that checks and it still is flaky, then send it off to Nikon!

Thanks, tried all that so off to Nikon it is.

AF mechanism breaking down seems to be a common fact to Nikon lenses. It has happened to me and it did also to a professional friend of mine.

Thanks hopefully the repair is not too horrible.

Anyone experience autofocus intermittently stopping on this lens? Will start working again after manipulating the manual focus ring back and forth a number of times and be spot on but will eventually stop again. Planning to send it to Nikon but concerned about what repair will cost.

We would like to send quality two sided Picture Christmas cards out this year. We have not been overly impressed with some of the companies we have used in the past. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

If you plan on shooting for anything but personal you will also need a permit.

Has anyone visited the "ghost town" of Bodie, CA? This old gold-mining town is a state park, preserved in a state of "arrested decay." My husband and I live about 4 hours by car west of Bodie, and are thinking of making a photo trip to the area next week (if it ever stops raining). The eerie photographs I've seen show homes, a Chinese laundry, a bank, a church, a stable and numerous other buildings all maintained as if the inhabitants had suddenly vanished. The pictures have one thing in common: there are no people in them, making me suspect they were taken when the park was closed. My question is this: is it possible to take pictures of the buildings without including hordes of tourists or is the park simply too crowded? Thank you.

We were there last October and crowds were fine you can get shots without people in them.
