Anyone experience autofocus intermittently stopping on this lens? Will start working again after manipulating the manual focus ring back and forth a number of times and be spot on but will eventually stop again. Planning to send it to Nikon but concerned about what repair will cost.

First I would clean the contacts on the camera & lens.

Then:

No, never had that issue but by the description it sound like it might be the switch which hopefully would not cost that much. Nikon will give you an estimate which you will have to approve.
The thing is, if you don’t get it fixed. It’s not reliable when you need it and worth nothing if you try to sell.
Good luck.

AF mechanism breaking down seems to be a common fact to Nikon lenses. It has happened to me and it did also to a professional friend of mine.

No this is not normal with this lens. With intermittent symptoms such as this always try the quickest and cheapest fixes first...cleans contacts on lens, flip switch from A to M and back to A again (sometimes these switches are hit accidentally in the course of use), turn camera off, dismount and remount lens again, firmware check - make sure up to date on both camera and lens. If all that checks and it still is flaky, then send it off to Nikon!

My 35-70 AF DX lens will sometimes hunt in AF. I swith to Manual for a while and try again.
ALSO, AF can get confused...
