It is just Canon's way of making more money......just wrong!! But I beat their system on this particular lens.

The ONLY crop sensor lenses that can NOT be mounted on full frame cameras are the Canon EFS lenses. Canon intentionally cripples these lenses by adding a hard rubber extension to the rear of these lenses. Other than that crippling extension the EF and EFS lenses are exactly the same mount.
But keep in mind that all crop sensor lenses will vignette on full frame cameras. Some crop sensor lenses only vignette at the wide end but will fully cover the full frame sensor when zoomed in on a subject.
