If you want gnarly trees, find an old hedgerow of Osage orange (hedgeapple) trees in a rural area. They were planted close together not only for a windbreak but perhaps to function as fence posts too. The competition for light and nutrients makes them grow in all sorts of weird (wonderful?) ways. Just look out for the thorns.

Isn't more capable video the biggest plus of the D780 over the D750?

A good friend told me years ago not to get a new camera, get a better lens instead. I've not always followed that advice.

Great shot. The ACD museum did not have one of these last time I was there. Classic car lovers need a pilgrimage to Auburn, IN. The museum was the Auburn factory. The showroom is an art deco palace.

Saw something yesterday about who spends what for NATO and defense. All members spend over the 2% bit on their defense. No freeloaders, that's nonsense. What's interesting is we spend 2.7% of our GNP on "defense." BUT, that includes the Pacific area too, not just Europe like everyone else. Soooo, one could argue we are the only freeloader in NATO. Ignoring that our GNP is way way higher than any others'.

Ahhh, the master of light (KTJohnson) provides an example that no direct light is best. Best for shiny cars anyway. Another well done portrait.

Uncomfortable glow? You might be getting the awful 5000K color temperature bulbs. They say it's daylight. Mmm, maybe, on a dismal cloudy day with 0 UV rays getting through (which makes colors pop). I've found 3500K bulbs to be the best for us, they're almost pure white light. 2700K mimics incandescent bulbs but to me looks sickly, jaundiced. They even have "warmer" bulbs, 2400K and 2200K. Ugh. The lower the Kelvin color temperature the "warmer" the color.

A mole's fur is very soft and silky. Reason might be so soil doesn't cling to it. But it's very surprising for such a VARMINT to have such exquisite fur. I learned from experience that if you have a lot of trees, you will have moles, at least in central Illinois. And the 2 Cairn terriers didn't deter or eliminate them, bah!

You have conquered light! I noticed the small shadows and it seems you took the shots around midday. No distracting reflections on the sides of the Maser. Great job. The sun hitting the top, hood, and trunk directly so no distractions there either.

Most of our car cruise-ins are in the late afternoon and evening. Crappy light. Cars & coffee is in the morning, crappy light.

Our Collete rep was Ian Fetzger. He has a photography business and does tours on his own as well. Hmm, maybe I don't have his name spelled correctly, Google can't find him. Oh well....

I used a Sigma 18-300 DX lens on my D5300. It has enough reach and is sharp enough for cropping. So yes, the 18-400 should be fine. We stayed at Entabeni Game Reserve in northeast RSA and had a great time. Then we went to Zimbabwe for Victoria Falls and Zambezi river cruise, and finally to Chobe National Park in Zambia. It was a letdown after the other stops. We did not go to Kruger National Park, which might be better than Chobe. We have friends that went to Tanzania and Kenya and our trip was a whole lot better, much closer to the animals. If we were completely careless and clueless we could have petted the lions from the safari vehicles.

Paul Simon said the "Elephants are kindly but they're dumb." They are neither. The ranger at Entabeni said the only animal one can not trust is the elephant, completely unpredictable. Lions, rhinos, wildebeest, cheetahs, cape buffalo, etc. are readable. Not elephants.

Our trip was a Collete vacation trip. I hope your trips is as much fun as ours. If you go to Zimbabwe, bring some US currency.

Kim is the master of car photography. Regarding the paint, I don't think I'm making this up, this car might have 3 or more coats of the color and 5 coats of clear. Then one sands the clear layer with fine and finer grade sandpaper. A good buffing and voila, what you see here. It's a ton of work, not to be undertaken lightly. But it sure looks great. By the way, some of the ultra fine sandpaper, 5000 grit for example, feels like suede and is expensive, $5 a sheet or more. Or was the last time I looked several (many?) years ago.

All that sanding eliminates any orange peel effect.

Wasn't "Fernwood" the name of a Louise Lasser comedy oh so many years ago? Martin Mull might have been in it too. Or was Mull's show "Fernwood Tonight?"
