Not always the case, thief broke into my locked trunk in Amsterdam and stole all my camera gear. Be careful when putting your gear in the trunk in residential areas that have rentals buildings that have two and three stories rentals.

Love my 17-35 2.8. Its heavy but not all that big so it balances out nicely on a D810 frame. At 17mm expect distortion so you need to learn to use that to your advantage. I find it sharp throughout its entire range. I bought mine used through National Camera. It developed a noise in the motor in less than two weeks so I brought it back to National Camera. They honored their warrantee and sent it in to Nikon. They replaced the motor. Repairs were paid by National Camera. National Camera is a great company to buy from.

Ditto on that, been buying from them for over 20 years!

Might want to drive up Pikes Peak if your wife hasn't been in high altitude before. Altitude sickness on the cog leaves no retreat. Google the symptoms. As was said already, might want to avoid Sturgis unless you relish mayhem, sleeping in your car, and sniffin' Harley exhaust. The Black Hills turn blue from the smoke not to mention the noise. 200 miles from Sturgis is about right.

Only an issue if you go during bike week - the first week in August.

I agree with your philosophy about enjoying travel. I find that my favorite experiences are when I do not live by a schedule but rather just "wing it" and see what the day brings. And I also agree, the best shots come from off the beaten trail (the non-tourist places) where the locals hang out - enjoy your travels!

Sorry to hear of your loss, he is a great looking dog. I had to do the same thing a number of years so I truly feel your pain. But rest assured, when you get up there he will be waiting at the gate with that grin on his face.

I have the 18-55, the 18-140 and the 55-300. If I were to re-buy I would go with the 18-300 AF-X DX If I was going to stay with a DX Body. If you plan on moving to a FX body anytime soon go with the 28-300mm FX lens and use your 18-55 for wider angle shots until you move up to FX.

I bought the 28-300 to put on a D750, it is now with Nikon trying to recalibrate it, but find it is no where as sharp as the 70-200 2.8. I understand the difference in cost $ 950 vrs +$ 2,000 but you get what you pay for. The only DX lens I have left is the 18-300 on my D7100 and that seems like very good lens on that body. I have not seen any appreciable difference between the 18-300 and the 28-300, but that might just be these old eyes - good luck on whatever you choose.

Silke, welcome to the forum. Please post some of your shots of the scenery around where you live - we would love to see them. I have traveled to Germany many times and Bavaria is very unique and beautiful especially around Garmisch. I go to the northwest part of Germany (Koln/Bonn area) every year for Karneval and visiting old friends and shooting hundreds of photos. Guts gluck fur ihr photografie..

I have that camera and the only DX lens I own is the 18-300 which is a good all around lens, IMHO.
