We will be leaving for Portugal and Spain next week for 12 days. I will be be carrying my camera and lenses in a small backpack. Most of the time I will have my camera and a lens around my neck. I have listened to several youtube videos about camera theft and viewed many Hog inputs about security and stolen cameras and lenses. Is a side bag more safe than a backpack that I will be taking on and off? What other precautions should I take while traveling? Your advise is appreciated.

It's too bad we have to be so concerned about camera theft but guess that is the way of the world today. Pacsafe has camera bags with security features that look good.

I've traveled extensively throughout both Western and Eastern Europe and never had an issue of any sort. Just use your camera the way you wold at home. People are getting too paranoid about what they see and hear on social media, the world isn't as bad as people think.

I agree. Just be careful and aware and you'll be fine.

Buy and insure a single small camera and zoom lens for travel. Lugging five to ten thousand dollars worth of equipment makes a tempting target, generates stress and can be an anchor. How do you secure it in a hotel room? Where do you put it when you are having lunch in typical European cafe? And then, there are the baggage and weight issues!

That said, stories may be easy to find. But, in several trips to Europe, I have not seen any camera theft. It is not an epidemic!

Please, take a quick look at these backpacks http://www.pacsafe.com/collections/camsafe-collection/

Steel cable reinforced shoulder straps and internal steel mesh that will prevent kinfe slashes opening your backpack. Wither that, or in urban areas, wear your backpack on your front.

Also, a bodyguard armed with a machine-gun would help.

Try the Pacsafe brand Carrysafe 150 Gii camera security strap, available from Amazon for $34.99.

Also...think mean thoughts as you walk around. Pay attention to the surroundings, and people, remain alert, and imagine yourself: castrating, decapitating, etc, people nearby. The mindset will give you a look, body language, etc, which warns would be attackers to try someone else.

For me, I always use a plain camera strap and carry sling camera bag. I only take my camera out of the bad when I'm ready to shot then I put it back in the bag.

This might not be the answer you're looking for but maybe a travel camera might relieve the stress of gear going missing. There are plenty high quality mirrorless that are potentially inexpensive that might give you more peace of mind and save space and give great images with reduced weight.
