Camera gear... Going for a looong time in a European vacation (from retirement)
Well, stop jumping up and down, "I'll be back!!!" (Stop booing, it will not make any difference either)
Now this is not about what I will take but what I will not.
Laptop - Out.
Dual camera - Out.
Two lenses - The rest out.
Load is lighter (a side reference to another thread) but the point is that I do not need the 'stuff'. I'll be seeing friends, family and other things NSFW - for the prudish American that is.
Request for information on what to see , do and capture... OUT!!! Yes, I 'know' some of Europe countries but the other areas I have no clue. Quite honestly all my 'discoveries' are accidental by going places where no sane tourist go, not the result of 'you should...'.
Meeting a guy on a terrasse that goes 'Ah bon!', 'Ah bon?' or 'Ah bon...' every time someone says something is more fun than running to catch a sunset or sunrise or anything else for that matter.
A successful trip is one that gives me memories in my head, not in a recording in a microchip. Also more often than not I am taken by what is going on around me and the camera is a useless weight and the end of my arm.
So, the expert in traveling out in UHH...
Any opinion on 'real travel'?

The best plan is no plan. Let the road take where it takes you and discover whatever is in front of you. Have a great trip and don't let the "must do's" stop you from doing the unknown.

You know that tourist attraction that everyone photographs? Well, find a small but interesting part and photograph that - the ironwork in one foot of the Eiffel Tower, the nave of that cathedral, the old locks or hinges on the ignored door of that palace, the windows of the castle keep - and people, especially having fun. Don't forget the paddle boats, the many small carnivals and the old men having coffee and talking about old women. Most important...... HAVE FUN!!!!!

I am sorry to say that Ireland is not on the book. Denmark, Sweden, yes...
Now If you want to meet in France I can arrange for (free) lodging in several places.
The best travel is taking the road less traveled and avoiding the "usual places." You can get postcards for that. Just go wherever the car is pointed when it's time to go. That's how we liked to tour on our motorcycles.

No bike... I cannot keep up with the weight...
Our stays are in small villages but for one, still small when compared to the US. (Bellegarde en Velley?)
When you come to a fork in the road - take it!!! Have a great experience.

Your style mimics my own. No reason to over pack. It may surprise some US travelers but they have laundry facilities in Europe. Shocking, but true. They also have stores where one can BUY things. And the US dollar makes it a good time to travel. Sometimes a camera limits what one can see..... I'm envious-- both the retirement and the trip. Enjoy.
On my last trip to Europe, all I brought with me was a small 35mm rangefinder camera and a bag full of film. It turned out to be a great decision; no battery charging, no time spent on the computer viewing and editing images while on the trip. I was able to relax and enjoy the vacation, but still capture plenty of images. Not until I returned home did I get a chance to see what I actually captured. Yes, a few here and there were either poorly exposed or badly framed, but most (at least 90%) were satisfactory.

Oh no, didn't mean that you should go by motorcycle!! Just go wherever you wish and see and experience places and things the average tourist doen't. That's the fun of touring about in new places. I wish you well and have a great time over there.

No worries here... A bike would be fun... IF I could handle one.
