A newbie here. When I use manual focus to focus on the moon, I have to use less than infinity even though the moon is 240,000 miles away. Does this mean my lens is not correctly constructed?
Thank you!

I love my FM even better than my FE. The FM worked even without a battery. The spit prism focus was accurate and the manual metering was spot on. Fast, light small and intuitive. If they would only make a digital like that now. Just put a digital sensor in my old FM and I would be happy forever!

I had a batch of these - FM, FE, Em and really loved the handling ... if they would have just had an auto focus feature which my old eyes badly needed ... sigh!

Except that a camera produces something positive whereas a gun's ultimate purpose is to destroy.

BS somewhat since I spent a large part of my life as a competitive bullseye pistol shooter and know that competition pistol is part of the Olympics, I also recognize firearms as legitimate sporting tools .... and that's all they are - tools; not evil objects, just inanimate tools, like a football, or a baseball pat, just tools.

Just to wax nostalgic for a moment, my favorite portrait lens for 35mm film Nikon was the Nikkor 105 f2.5. Sharpest lens I even owned.

My first digital was an Agfa, 1998, I think 16mb sensor, 3:1 zoom, pivoting screen and frankly I liked it. The most amazing thing is that it came with photo processing software (Photowise) which I still use on my Win XP computer!

I recently bought a refurb Nikon P7800 from Adorama. Looks great, performs well. Only surprise is that is was missing an instruction book. Everything else was there. I bought a "Compact Field Guide" from Amazon. It was more than 10% off Nikon's price for a refurb

If you are reading your card directly from the camera, that's why it is so slow. If your computer supports USB3 get a card reader and prepare to be amazed.

Greg,

Thank you. I will have to try that. This laptop is more than 5 years old so I'm not sure

I use 32MG memory cards (2) in my current camera. I use them only to store the images of a daily shoot, which I download to my laptop, then also save to a WD remote HF for storage. I will then erase and format the card within the camera. I do not use the cards for "storage" just for my daily use.

Question:
1. Am I foolish for having such large cards for this endeavor (Shoot only in Raw).
2. Am I damaging the cards by erasing and formatting them so often?

I understand I could get by with smaller size cards but these are what I bought from the start. I have two of them to support any long days of enjoying my hobby and just in case one would crap out on me in the "field". Being IT background I do not believe I am hurting the cards since they are not like a Hard Drive or tape which could wear out specific sectors. What do the experienced HOGs say?

Thanks for looking and commenting, Greg.

Greg,
My computer reads the 32 gb card in my D5300 slowly and that's my only beef. I shoot RAW and Jpeg and it's ton's of room. I have added two 16gb cards just to speed up my laptop's reading of the cards.

Hi I want to ask for everyone's opinion on what would be a good camera for a beginner in digital photography but also keep up with me as I grow as a digital photographer. I want a decent camera. I don't want to have to buy a new camera because I have out grown the camera I do buy. I am going to ask about a Canon or Nikon. I have noticed Nikon is a little cheaper than a Canon. Can anyone suggest what make and/or model would be a good mid-range digital camera? I don't want the cheapest but I don't need the top of the line either. All of your opinions matter to me.

another first step to consider would be to visit a large bookstore (B&N for example) and browse a few books about digital photography and digital cameras to get a preview of features that matter.

I have always had a small camera that I carry when the weather is bad or when I have no particular plan to take pictures. A few I remember are a Petri Color 35, a Rollei 35, a high end Canon Elph (with the now obsolete APS film system), and most recently a Canon Digital Elph S 500. Well, after long years of service, the S 500 has recently died and I am looking for a replacement. Haven't had too much luck, since the pocket sized cameras mostly have no viewfinder, or an awkward add on. Any suggestions for a replacement, or somewhere to get the current camera repaired? Don't want to spend a fortune, since though I take care of them, the small cameras are the ones I prefer to risk if necessary -- the expendables. Thanks!

With the help of a number of UHH members, I researched small camera models to supplement my D5300 kit and ended up with a Coolpix P7800. It's almost pocketable, has an EVF, and a good zoom. I got a refurb from Adorama. It came with no instructions so I just received from Amazon, David Busch's field guide. So far PIX look good, but I can't comment on a comparison to my D5300 glass.

A remote call can get the predator to a location that might be up to 100 yards away. But you have to control scent, wind direction, camo clothing - including face mask, and any light reflections from polished surfaces. I've had coyotes bolt from little more that a blink of my eye. Plan on shooting at distances of 100 yards. Most remotes can't work from a hand held control more that 100 yards. Never call predators without a sidearm. Many are dangerous. Coyotes especially when pack hunting.

Investing in a tree stand improves chances greatly.

Sounds like I better have a secure hiding place if I use a mouth call! A remote electronic call may be worth the money. Thanks lightcatcher.

Davey, It's the most expensive D610 you can buy!!
Get the 610 and save a TON of money!!
You want a 610, get a 610, not a 610 with a hopped up sensor for twice the money!!!
Well, anyway, that's my opinion!! 🙊 🙈 🙉 💣

Thank you, really. I like unvarnished opinions. It helps me learn about stuff I don't know. I will look at the 610.
