Has anyone one bought a refurbished camera from Nikon? Were there any problems with the camera? Did you have to send it back? Do they have high shutter counts?

I see that Nikon is offering 10% off their refurbished cameras and this may be a great deal if I know that I'm not getting a camera that has 10,000 shots on it already. I know they are gone over by the Nikon techs but a very used camera won't be worth the money. Is there any type of set standards that keep it from being a very used camera?

Thanks for all your info!!!

I have not bought refurb direct from Nikon but have bought 2 expensive lenses from authorized distributors. Excellent savings and so far so good. On the expensive lenses, I did pay extra for extended warrantee. Currently considering a refurb full frame body at my local camera shop.

I bought a refurbished Nikon D80 awhile back so I could get it converted to infrared. It had about 100 shutter snaps on it and it is working great. If i were ever interested in buying a refurbished Nikon from Nikon it would probably be a D7200.

A "refurbished" camera basically means a virtually new camera with very little use (extremely low shutter count), complete with manufacturer's full warranty. Only a manufacturer can offer a refurbished camera, sometimes through a dealer, but the same camera only from a dealer, is a used camera, which will have only a dealer's limited warranty.

Refurbs can be dealer display cameras, or cameras immediately returned after purchase, which cannot technically be re-sold as new. Sometimes they never left their original box.

A D3200 I bought has off by about one stop, a condition readily repaired under warranty by a local authorized repair center.

Over the years I have bought 5 Nikon factory refurbished camera bodies and 9 lenses.

Everything looked and performed like new and I never had to sent any of my cameras or lenses back to Nikon for repair.

All my cameras came with an initial shot count of 500 or less and one of them actually had a shot count of 1.

You might want to check with authorized re-sellers like Adorama, B&H, Cameta and Roberts Camera. They frequently have specials on manufacturer refurbished items and their prices are often lower than the Nikon store. Some of them even provide a 1 year warranty in addition to the usual 90 day factory warranty that Nikon offers on refurbished items.

I have purchased refurbished cameras from Nikon, Canon and Fuji. All have been in excellent condition, fully operational, with all original accessories. I have had no problems or complaints whatever.

Your chances of receiving a camera with 10,000 shots on it are remote. A camera with that number of shots on it will not likely qualify for refurbishing. Cameras that are "next" to new include demos, open box models, those returned immediately by an unsatisfied customer, and possibly an estate sale. Several years ago I purchased another manufacturer's "flagship" model from their refurb store that arrived with <100 clicks on it. Today it is operating perfectly with only operator errors against it's track record. Manufacturers realize the huge value of refurb business and they are not going to let something like you mentioned cut into their profitable program. My first refurb had me anxious until the item arrived, I thought it was new from the condition it was in. Today I can count about 1/3 of my gear as a refurb. Great idea for the manufacturers and great idea for consumers (you and the rest of us). Remember the item is returnable if you are not totally satisfied. GL.

Had purchased a Nikon Factory Refurbished from one of the big NY stores. Boxed with all normally enclosed items. Everything was perfect except it had 40,000 activations. May not be considered high by some ( based on 150,000 expected life), but was concerned about prior usage. Like a car, you are more comfortable with one with 10,000 miles then 90,000....although the higher one may have had better care then the lower one...but who knows. I returned for full credit.

(1) Pays to deal with reputable retailer. (2) The older the model, the better chance it will have high numbers.

I bought a refurbished D7100 about a year ago and have had no trouble with the camera. Now my learning curve???? That's a whole other story. It is a fun story though

My camera had 213 pictures taken when I got it, it now has 4,927. I tend to pass around the usage between my cameras.

I recently purchased a Nikon 1 J3 refurb by Nikon, sold by Beach Camera. It had 13 clicks on it, looks brand new and works perfectly.

Bought a D3200 body refurbed by Nikon. Came in a Nikon box with all the accessories, had under 100 clicks and has worked like a charm since day one.

All of my gear was purchased as refurbs - my D7100 and 18-105 from Cameta, my 75-300 and SB-900 directly from Nikon. No problems with any of them except that which I caused.

I will never buy 'new' if refurbs are available.

I say go for it.

Just about everything I buy is from Nikon refurbished. Bodies, lenses never had an issue. The last purchase was a D610 it had a shutter count of 19. Good luck.
