I've been watching a Red-headed Woodpecker nest tree, and got this today:

This is the same tree that they used last year, and I've learned a lot in that time. With experience it has gotten easier and studying the birds behavior is fascinating.

Great shot of this munching on a Marsh Harrier! Thanx for sharing!

Thanks, Sinewsworn, for the ID. I had no idea what it was!

Found this site about photographing various dragonflies, although from a rather British point of view. He discusses one of the problems being catching one sitting still in order to photograph it. Fortunately for me, the kingbird had already taken care of that detail.

I wanted to see if this image could be enlarged enough to concentrate on the Kingbird's eye in relation to the dragonfly eye.

A combination of Topaz AI Sharpen and then Topaz Gigapixel got me this:

Acceptable, or a bridge too far?

Beautiful shot. We have Western, Cassin's Tropical and Thick-billed Kingbirds down here in the summer. None of them are as striking as the Eastern Kingbird

Thanks, Curmudgeon. I looked up those and found this site:

Kind of a buzzkill seeing dead specimens, but interesting details, nonetheless.

Another one of your spectacular shots, Marshall!

Thanks, UTMike, glad you liked it. I'll be milking that experience for quite a while. The kingbird sat perched for 24 seconds and I was able to get off about 40 shots.

As that old Christmas joke goes: "...there's bound to be a pony in here somewhere."

Great capture, too bad for the dragonfly.

Not quick, either. The bird sat there perched with the struggling dragonfly for over twenty seconds before flying off with its meal.

Excellent capture, Marshall. Viewing the birds eye through the translucent wing is really unique.

Thanks for noticing that, John. I was intrigued by that detail also.

If I had superman reflexes and vision I could have gotten a BIF of this Kingbird chasing down and snatching a dragonfly out of midair.

As it was, I feel privileged to have been there and witnessed it, and once the bird had flown to a nearby branch I was able to get a photo.

Eastern Kingbirds are one of my favorite birds. They really live up to their scientific name: Tyrannus tyrannus

Hello everyone. Just added a 5D MK IV to my photo bag and have a question regarding the image review. With my 7D MK II, after pressing shutter, the image appears on the LCD screen almost instantly. When I shot a few images with the 5D MK IV, I counted about three seconds before the image appears. Thought maybe it was the image review time, so I set it a 2 seconds. However, it still took about three seconds for the image to appear, then it disappeared after 2 seconds. Just curious if this is "normal" for the MK IV, or is there something I missed in setting things up initially.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Michael
Hello everyone. Just added a 5D MK IV to my photo... (show quote)

Hello Michael,

I also shoot the 5DMK4, and have a slightly different take on your problem. To me, having a review of a shot appear automatically was really distracting, especially with the camera still up to my eye when following an action sequence or wildlife situation.

So, in the menu I turned auto review completely off, and if I want to review a shot it is there at a press of the review button on the back of the camera, and that holds until another press of the button turns it off.

Try it, you might like it.

Redwing Blackbirds are nesting now here in KY. I saw this fledgling while on the walking track around our local park pond.

RWBB's favor nests near water, and often deep down in cattails, nearly impossible to see their nests. I did see one this spring that was at eye level pretty much in the open on a tree, but still right over water with cattails nearby.

I've noticed a marked decrease in activity at our backyard feeders recently, and it dawned on me that it coincided with the rise of Brood X Cicadas here in KY, after an absence of seventeen years.

And it is not only birds that are taking advantage of this bonanza. This chipmunk was having a fine meal this morning:

Sitting out in the yard tonight I heard what I thought was a very weird bird call. On further thought I believe it was a cicada, just beginning to get its voice. Our trees are full of the shed husks, so a loud chorus is probably not far behind.

Thanks. They are just starting, no sound yet.

We saw the first live one in the yard today, KY, north of Georgetown.

Plenty of exoskeletons in our milkweed patch, but this one was out and about, red eyes and all! Brood X, I believe.

I notice in most photos of Great Blue Herons there is plumage on the back of the bird's head. This one does not have that. Is that a sign that this one is immature or a female or what?

Good photo, Frank. Beware, though, photographing GBHEs can become addictive! lol

From what I've read, it takes several years for that head plume to develop. Both sexes look alike, with the male generally being larger.

[quote=Badgertale]This photo appears to be a little wonky to some...but to me it is an issue with the lens used and the proximity to the subject matter that explains it. How about you?[unquote]

Here is a discussion of this effect at The Online Photographer, a blog by Mike Johnston.

Every year during Derby week they make the announcement of the new honorees for the Thoroughbred Hall of Fame. This year's inductee is....drum roll please... American Pharaoh!

I traveled to Louisville in 2015 for Pharaoh's homecoming after he became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years and I was fortunate to get this shot of him in the paddock. A beautiful and powerful animal with personality who loved the attention of the crowd that day.

Fine photo of a magnificent horse!

Any hoggers who want to get some photos of great horses might want to make their way to KY and take one of the tours at this working farm dedicated to the care of retired Thoroughbreds.
