Fourth of July Salute: Red, White, and Flew

I've been watching a Red-headed Woodpecker nest tree, and got this today:

This is the same tree that they used last year, and I've learned a lot in that time. With experience it has gotten easier and studying the birds behavior is fascinating.

Thanks!

One thing I learned this year is that both adults will sometimes get inside the tree at the same time, along with however many nestlings there are.

So far I've only seen one baby beak poking above the edge, and that was only one day about a week ago.

I've since read that RHWPs can have up to two broods per season, and also can reuse the same nest cavity for the 2nd brood. Based on some guess-timate math I think I missed the fledging of any in the first brood, and this photo is of a fledgling from a 2nd brood, taken on 21Aug2021. I missed his first flight by about a day...
