Canon 5D MK IV Image Appearing in the LCD Screen

Hello everyone. Just added a 5D MK IV to my photo bag and have a question regarding the image review. With my 7D MK II, after pressing shutter, the image appears on the LCD screen almost instantly. When I shot a few images with the 5D MK IV, I counted about three seconds before the image appears. Thought maybe it was the image review time, so I set it a 2 seconds. However, it still took about three seconds for the image to appear, then it disappeared after 2 seconds. Just curious if this is "normal" for the MK IV, or is there something I missed in setting things up initially.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Michael

Among other things much bigger MP count, it takes time to process.
It could also have to do with any in camera processing you have set. I do straight raw, no processing and haven't noticed any delay And I do have/use 5DIV & 7DII (plus 80D, 90D and my wife's T6s & SX50)

If you take some quick consecutive shots, it probably takes a moment or three before a review image appears because the camera is still processing the images that were taken. Look to see if the "processing" light is on and if the review image appears after the light goes out.

I agree with most likely in camera processing. The picture view time ( as other view times like menu's ) can probably be set for a longer time period if desired in the menu system.

It is a known behavior. Turn off all the lens correction options unless you want in-camera JPEGs.

I concur with Robert, and I too have a 5DIV and do not notice too much lag. However, could your lag have to do with your memory card write speed? I only use the faster SanDisk Extreme Pro cards and the pic on the screen appears almost as fast as I can take my eye from the viewfinder.

Thanks for the info. I do use San Disk Extreme pro cards. When I shoot with the 7D II, no lag time with either RAW or JPEG. Will try an extreme PROcard in the 5D IV.

Have you formatted your cards lately? I noticed a lag when I had multiple folders saved (and renamed) on a card recently. The processing light remained on before it showed a review. When I formatted it stopped the lag.

Thanks for the tip, I usually format before each shoot unless it involves the same subjects.

I have a 5D IV and agree with others about in-camera processing likely causing lag. If you shoot only RAW (what I do), then there are a lot of processes you can turn off. Even though you are shooting only RAW, these processes, if on, will still get carried out on the .JPG that gets displayed on the rear LCD.

First, make sure you Image Quality does not include JPG; only RAW. Then turn off all the lens aberration correction processes such as Peripheral Illumination Correction, Distortion Correction, Digital Lens Optimizer, and Chromatic Aberration Correction.

Likewise, you don’t need: Auto Lighting Optimizer, Long Exposure Noise Reduction, High ISO Noise Reduction or Highlight Tone Priority. Lastly, unless you have a compelling reason to use it, make sure Dual Pixel RAW is off.

I have all these settings off and shoot only RAW, and the images show up on the rear screen nearly instantaneously when I shoot with my 5D IV.

👍👍 Right answer. I turned my corrections off also and apply them in post instead. Problem solved.

Hello Michael,

I also shoot the 5DMK4, and have a slightly different take on your problem. To me, having a review of a shot appear automatically was really distracting, especially with the camera still up to my eye when following an action sequence or wildlife situation.

So, in the menu I turned auto review completely off, and if I want to review a shot it is there at a press of the review button on the back of the camera, and that holds until another press of the button turns it off.

Try it, you might like it.

Marshall

That's probably a good idea in many cases!
