Today I decided to shoot at 1/4000 sec to stop the wing motion. I had sunshine all morning. It worked out OK.

I think you would do better handheld single point focusing - f 8 to f 11, 1/1000 to 1/4000 sec in manual. After a few test shots I also put ISO in manual. Last week I came home with about 140 usable images, all shot within 3 hours. I go to the Chicago Botanic Garden with a small folding chair, and the Hummingbirds don't mind at all. Sometimes they will be only six feet from me.

Olive-sided Flycatcher do breed in some parts of Michigan. I think wm1944 is correct.

With this camera/lens combination I would normally use a shutter speed of 1/1200 to 1/1500 sec and also would have to increase the ISO.

Excellent photograph. What setting/s would you have changed?

I was taking photos of a Heron and Egret in the lagoon at the Chicago Botanic Garden when this Bald Eagle showed up. I had no time to change any settings.

They are great photos, but you don't need wildlife skills for this bird because he is banded and tied down to the post.

Yes, very nice set of images. Far beyond my wildlife skills. I'll stick to flowers.

Oh, but I can do the black background editing.

The P1000 is not a light weight at 3.12 lb / 1.42 kg and has a tiny sensor at 1/2.3.

According to P1000 specifications on B&H website https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1423182-REG/nikon_26522_coolpix_p1000_digital_camera.html the camera has a 1/2.3" sensor. 90% of people are happy with there smart phone camera, some people are happy with a tiny sensor in the P900 and P1000. Not me. (

You are right! I found a detailed table of sensor sizes and it shows 1/2.3 to correspond to 6.30X4.72mm with a diagonal of 7.87mm, even smaller than your generous 11mm. This sensor is used on smart phones and I find it had to believe that the P1000 has such as mall sensor, maybe it's a mistake. I suspect the size of sensor for the P1000 is closer to the APS-C sensor which is 23.6X15.7mm.

I think you will find that 1/2.3″ means (1 divided by 2.3)” or 0.434″ = 11mm and that is the diagonal measure of the sensor.
ssymeono wrote:
1/2.3 inches should be 24X20mm.

Same size as the P900. Very small. 1/2.3" (~ 6.16 x 4.62 mm)

I think you are correct with Broad-winged Hawk ID. It's not a Coopers Hawk. A Coopers Hawk is slate grey on top. Your bird is brown.

Spotted this beautiful bird in my back yard. I looked it up on the internet and I think it's a Broad-winged Hawk. Shot with a Canon 5D Mk iv, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 II.

Is it me or is the main discussion forum gradually being taken over by people going on holiday and asking what lens to take and where to go for photo ops. There is I think five topics in today’s Main forum asking these sort of questions. Isn’t it about time there was a separate area for these topics. Sorry to be negative about this.
