Shallow DOF can be very creative. But I'm with Linda on this one. If you're going to use shallow DOF on this flower, do it all the way so it looks deliberate instead of "accidental." So I like the idea, and I'm more partial to Linda's "going all the way."

My take:

An alien creature in an eerily-beautiful alien world

Beautiful capture! Well worth waiting for.

The visit last fall in the rain was definitely worth it. Almost no other people there, and two nice bucks were standing in a beautiful grove of aspens right next to the road and posed for me.

You're tantalizing us with your vivid description. Any chance of seeing those photographs?

I go back to photographs I have shot and apply faux HDR for interesting effects. And to really jazz it up, I add a touch of "cartoon" (or "comic") to play up the grittiness. Here are rusting implements on the Fielding-Garr Ranch on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake in Utah. I very much enjoy engaging in post-processing. I can't wait to get back to my computer to see what I can come up with, especially with photographs that I think are kind of "meh."

Beautiful capture. Nice shallow DOF so that you can really see the spoon bill of this Spoonbill. I had never even heard of these birds nor seen one until I joined UHH. Such an education!

I, for one, like this landscape view. It catches the end of the land mass on the extreme right and seems "finished" for that reason. Also, love the rugged rocks in the foreground, and the reflections are a knock-out! All the pale blues make the browns and the structures stand out. Good work!

There is a certain "style" that you have that, obviously, doesn't appeal to everyone. I, for one, love it! I immediately recognized these post-processing effects from viewing some of your "pier photographs" previously. So different from riffmax above who did a wonderful photograph as well.

These pellies were hanging around for an easy feed while a fisherman was cleaning fish. Australia only has one species of pelican, which is black & white. I have seen thousands of them over the years & have never seen one with a rusty colored front before--this one is a bit of a mystery, at least to me. Downloading is recommended.

Great captures! Quite a story here for this pelican!

This photo looks like he appointed himself "traffic cop" of the area.

Beautiful ritual object, beautiful photograph, wonderful capture of light. I, for one, would not eliminate the black line at the top. It shows that the two "columns" on the sides "end" at the top. If you eliminated the line, I think, you would miss the fact that the "frame" does not continue across the top, and it would give the impression that the photograph was cropped too short. Just my observation. Good luck in the calendar competition.

Not sure how I feel about whether the glass should be filled or not, but even though the second glass is better with its shadows, it is still floating. The left edge of the glass is above the dark horizontal line of the bottle. The line of the bottle shows that it is "resting" on the table. If the glass edge were covering that line, then the glass would also be "resting" on the table. Hope that's clear. I've included the area that I feel needs more work.

See how the left edge of the glass is "above" the bottle?

He's ready for his close-up, Mr. DeMille; I'll go with #3.

Would you think editing would improve the composition?

#1 creates the entire world of the scene. The pier and its reflection jutting in from the right, the wispy trees on the left with the darker foliage on the left edge, and the bit of brown with its dry foliage in the foreground. Now, how are your cloning skills? For me, getting rid of the entire structure on the right would de-clutter the scene and keep focus on the fog and its effect.

I wouldn't throw this one away. It creates a mood in a lovely scenic and is something to savor and enjoy. And you'll remember the story of "hoping to not slip on the moss." Listen to your instinct and don't get rid of it!
