In a bit of a rush the other night, I didn't set up well on a few shots. One I'd normally throw away due to focus actually interests me.

So, my questions is, what do you think of a landscape where only a near subject is in focus?

I did want the horizon in focus, but I was shooting handheld just above this tide-pool hoping to not slip on the moss. And... I didn't focus right for what I thought I wanted.

You took a really nice that I like
However
I prefer a full depth of field -- (say around f16 with a 24mm)

I wouldn't throw this one away. It creates a mood in a lovely scenic and is something to savor and enjoy. And you'll remember the story of "hoping to not slip on the moss." Listen to your instinct and don't get rid of it!

I prefer to make sure I'm going to get what I intend in a frame before I operate any shutter. I also prefer the entire scene in a landscape to be in focus.

This subject came up not long ago and I was surprised how few examples I could find via Google Images that show shallow dof for landscapes. The ones I found were very shallow dof, such as a single flower in focus in a field full of flowers.

It does seem as if this one is a mistake as I squinted to bring the clouds into focus. If you are pleased with it, there is no reason to change it. I'd personally be tempted to apply some playful pp - such as watercolor or soft focus as it is quite a spectacular scene.

A beautiful shot with the reflection in the water. No need to discard a good photo just because it isn't sharp.

I'm pretty much "Old School", I guess. For my landscape images I really want sharp focus "From here to eternity." The only exceptions are shots where foreground vegetation is "obviously" out of focus but still adds to the images.

I think the colors, composition, and impact of this image more than makes it a worthwhile and enjoyable photograph.

My first priority is to get the shot then play around if I can.......It's a great catch to me .Bracket & Take as many shots as possible before it changes and take your chances. I like it but some one will always feel differently . It only has to please you first & foremost. If you are happy with it , I will know this and that's the lesson and the journey we all seek.

The colors are gorgeous and almost carries the image. Almost but not quite. I prefer the background in focus in this case.

When I downloaded the picture, I felt it had an "Other Worldly" feel to it. The half dome in the background looks like a world sinking into a fiery death and the world we're viewing from may be next. Sometimes my imagination goes in twisted directions. For me, it works just fine the way it came out.
