I could never get really sharp images with the Sigma 150-500. Just sold it and got a Canon 300mm F4 and really love it. You will loose auto focus with a 1.4 converter.

Buying a canon lens would not help as he is a nikon user (gaffa tape ?) and wether or not he loses auto focus would depend on which nikon body was in use. Even when you are supposed to lose it, as with my old d300s, it may well work, but not reliably. I would have thought that the sort of situation where you are using a 500mm lens (effectively a 750mm) with a 1.4 converter would not be one where auto focus would be of any interest.

I have the sigma 150 - 500mm and had problems with "soft" images. Then someone on this site suggested taking the filter off the front. This has given a marked improvement on the results. I'm still at the stage of playing with new lens and new body, but the results so far look promising. Hey it looks like the spell-chick is working !!

I have the Tamron 90mm macro, which I'm very pleased with. No fuss lens, and makes a good portrait lens as well. I would have thought that would be in your price range. Personally I would never go for a zoom lens for macro. It's just another problem to through into the equation, also, lens quality is vital at high magnification, which makes most zooms suspect comared to a fixed length lens.

If you are shooting a wedding, and assuming you are male, you need to follow the dress code for such an event. If you don't have a tie, go home and get your Mummy to dress you.

There one thing that your daughter isn't and that is ugly, and she wouldn't have been so with braces either. Give her a year to gain her confidence, and you won't be able to keep up with her.

I have both the 35mm and the 50mm f1.8 nikors, and they are both excellent lens. As a general use prime on a cropped format then use the 35mm, but for portrait work I would recommend the 50mm. I don't know how the prices go in the US, but I would have thought that you would just about get both for the $300 you mentioned. You will certainly be able to find a use for both. The 50mm has the added bonus in that it is compatable to full sized sensors.

I have a G12 as a P&S camera even though my real cameras are Nikon. I like itenough to lend it to my ex-wife for our daughter's forthcoming wedding. Make what you will of that.

I have also thought I have focus issues with this lens. However on further tests most of it is mam made problems - camera movement- It's a big lump to hand hold, and takes some practise. The only way to cure it is to do just that, practise. Mounted on a tripod with the stabilization turned off, focus is fine. DoF is shallow, particularly wide open and full extention, but that is to be expected with a lens of this size.

That's correct - it is a Lancaster. I believe is is called "City of Lincoln" due to the fact that most Bomber Command Stations during WW2 were in Lincolnshire. It flew over my house last weekend on its way to another display.

Go for a new machine. Even if you could get the RAM, 4Gb is probably the max you can use with a computer that old, as you are probably using Windows 32. The files do take longer to download, and also to adjust in photoshop, and that is on a relatively modern system.

I treat cards as films. Keep them small - normally 2G. I have just gone up to the really big ones (8G) now that I have got a D800, but they are still changed regularly. Take one out - put one in. It's not rocket science. It's when you get these silly size cards that you only change every 5 years, that you get out of the habit of good basic techniques.
