I have a Nikon D3200 and want to buy a good lens for taking pictures of my new Grandchild. I am looking at the Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX and the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8 G. Any feedback on which one would be better for indoor shots. Thanks

You might wish to consider the 16-35MM 1.4. I bought this lens for an recent camping trip that ended up coming to 11,030 miles before it was over. I am not sorry I did. It handled close up's just fine as well as a bit further out. JMHO :)

Could you provide us with a link to your 16-35 1.4 ??? A search of B&H doesn't turn it up .......

What is your budget ?? I have a 50mm 1.8 and love it. Whats not to love at roughly a $100.

The 16-35 someone else mentioned as a 1.4 probably is a 2.8 and comes in around $1500. Big difference in $$$

Yea $1500 is not an option. Hoping to stay below $300.

Is the 1.4 JFTR a Nikon lens?

That's an f/4, not a 1.4. Look at the Rockwell link.

Both have the same aperture, so both will provide great light for indoors. Only difference is you can stand back further with the 50mm Lens. I have both and they both work great for indoors.

I would buy the 50mm. I use it on my D800, and have no serious gripes. A fast prime, (and F1.8G is pretty fast); it is well regarded.

see http://mansurovs.com/nikon-50mm-f1-8g-review

On the D3200 it is a great focal length for portraiture.

Go with the 35, your camera has a crop sensor and if you are shooting indoors the 50 will be too tight.

I have both the 35mm and the 50mm f1.8 nikors, and they are both excellent lens. As a general use prime on a cropped format then use the 35mm, but for portrait work I would recommend the 50mm. I don't know how the prices go in the US, but I would have thought that you would just about get both for the $300 you mentioned. You will certainly be able to find a use for both. The 50mm has the added bonus in that it is compatable to full sized sensors.

These are excellent lenses. Very sharp on my D300 and the price is affordable. They are both excellent for indoor shots. Here are some indoor shots (not portrait) just to show you how capable the 35mm f1.8 AFS lens is even wide open.

shot wide open at f1.8
shot wide open at f1.8...

At f3.5
At f3.5...

That lens is F4 but with VR you can save about 2 stops. Sells for $1,160 I own it. will give you effective range of 24-52 on that Body. Very sharp Lens. The 17-35 2.8 Non VR is around $1,550
