I'm ordering a camera for a surprise birthday gift to my son. He's never shown much of an interest in photography until recently. He's tired of taking pics with a cell phone. I thought the Canon G12 would be a good choice. He's a big guy 6'3" big hands. He can wear it on a belt. It's the right price. I shoot Nikon, but always liked the Canon G. Any opinions??? I'd buy from B&H so he could return it.

thanks

The G12 is an awesome camera but it may be too much camera for your son. It has all the features that a DSLR comes with in a small camera. Very sharp pictures, great video and the camera can shoot raw or jpeg. It has the latest processor so the colors come out great without much post processing. I recently went to Hawaii using the G12 and it worked perfectly. Your son will learn photography with this camera and then he can buy a DSLR for his next camera. Good Luck!

You may want to consider the Nikon P7100. It has all of the Canon features but has a longer tele (200mm) and cost a lot less. BV

FYI-P7100 is at most $20 less than the G12.

Just checked Amazon. Nikon p7100 @ $309. Remember you are getting 200mm Tele. BV

But with that Nikon, you are sacrificing image quality. I would walk around a whole pile of Nikons and that 200mm zoom, to buy a G12. Nikon may make a good DSLR, but their P&S technology is in the stone ages.

I'm a Nikon shooter, but I like Canon P&S I was a media specialist in a school and always bought Canon P&S. I think I'll go with the G12. I hardly use a 200mm zoom. I think a G12 is a great 1st camera.
thanks,
Sue

I have bee a nikon shooter all my life. You are right. "Stone Ages"might be an exaggeration but Nikon has a way's to go with their small cameras. I have a L120 that sucks. I would go with Canon. That will be my next point and shoot.

I have the Canon and agree about the quality. It is always with me and many of my best images came from this little but mighty guy. You won't be sorry. If he is serious about getting into photography this camera will help him get there.

I have a g10 and it is fantastic. It is now the summer and terrible hot. I carry my G10 everywhere while my DSLR sits at home.

I had the G11. Loved it so much I got the G12 when I lost it. I have a dslr too but the G12 is great for taking everywhere and I never go without it. You can start with using automatic and progress from there. Very clear, sharp images with good colour and great close ups too. It has enough mps. for cropping images and staying sharp and you can take videos as well. These days you can get a G12 in Australia for under $490. It used to be over $700. It's a great camera. All the best for your final decision!

I have a canon G12, it has the most amazing capabilities for a small camera, macro is beautiful, vivid color mode, can stir the imagination. It replaces my other cameras and expensive 100mm Macro on tripod, for my flower garden macro photographs, your Son will enjoy this camera's performance immediately on manual because it has one of the finest lens on it, I hope your Son has fun and enjoys his new camera.
