If your getting him a high-end point&shoot like the Canon G-12 or the Nikon P-7100, make sure he is serious about photography because these cameras are designed for pro shooters they have the same settings as a DSLR.
True enough, but what a great camera it is!
Should he become interested he has a great learning camera.
I have a G10 and its a great little camera.Takes fantastic quality photos. I have since moved on to the Canon DSLR 600D but still often use my G10 when I dont want to lug the larger camera around. The G12, updated from G10 should be even better as I think it has the flip out lcd screen. I used my G10 on Auto until I did some photography classes. Its a great camera to learn to move from auto to manual. The controls are easy to access, no complicated in camera menu to have to navigate for the most basic of functions like some compacts. I dont know the Nikon mentioned. Definitely choose a camera with easy to use controls, complicated menus will definitely put your son off.
I am sure your son will love the G12. It has all the bells and whistles needed for a beginning or even an experienced photographer. With a little practice he will be taking great photos.
Congratulations on your wise choice of cameras.

I want to thank everyone for their responses. I ordered it from B&H.

I'm ordering a camera for a surprise birthday gift to my son. He's never shown much of an interest in photography until recently. He's tired of taking pics with a cell phone. I thought the Canon G12 would be a good choice. He's a big guy 6'3" big hands. He can wear it on a belt. It's the right price. I shoot Nikon, but always liked the Canon G. Any opinions??? I'd buy from B&H so he could return it.
thanks
A second attempt at answering. This image was taken with the G-10, handheld and is composed of seven images. Again I say the G-12 is an excellent camera and one your son can grew into. J. Goffe and remember the f/stops here!
