I have always had "so-so" results from Sigma lenses........many have failed on location, Sigma has made good on warranties but I have lost many opportunities because of the failures. Anyone have experience with this lens??

also will a nikon 1.4 teleconverter work with this sigma lens??

I had heard so many great comments about this lens, I purchased one. But I was really, really disappointed in the results. All my photos were soft, compared with the same photos I took with my 100-400mm Canon L lens. I sent it back. But that was just my experience.

My thoughts are that if you want prime lens quality, you buy a prime lens.

if you want a zoom lens that can compete with cheaper prime lens then for Nikon users, look no further than the 200-400mm lens BUT... You get what you pay for.

The Sigma 500mm zoom will get you closer to your subject but if anyone thinks it will compete with more expensive lens, then just remember that old adage about: 'you get what you pay for!'

I own the Canon 100-400mm lens. I tried the Sigma 150-500 and was disapointed. It is a good lens but can not compair to a Canon L quality lens.

If you can not afford the Canon or Nikon the go for it, but if you have the Canon or Nikon don't expect much.

A friend of mine shoots Nikon and he had this lens. He always got soft images at 500mm and ok images at 400mm. He gave the lens to his sister in Reno when he got a good Nikor lens to replace the Sigma.

I could not get rid of this lens fast enough!! Tried everything I could think of, results were always soft.

Sold it in 2 months for HALF what I paid. Bought the Canon 400mm f/5.6. The results were tremendously better without even trying.

Some people here will defend this lens, and that's fine if it works for them. I will never buy another Sigma, have had much better luck with Tamron, but still try to buy only Canon.

You don't save money if you end up selling it for much less, then spend the extra money on the better lens..

I don't want to get into the whole "Canon is better than Nikon" argument, because I don't know anything about Nikkor glass. But what I do know, is the majority of the people I see with this Sigma are Nikon users.?.?

I have the sigma 150 - 500mm and had problems with "soft" images. Then someone on this site suggested taking the filter off the front. This has given a marked improvement on the results. I'm still at the stage of playing with new lens and new body, but the results so far look promising. Hey it looks like the spell-chick is working !!

I could never get really sharp images with the Sigma 150-500. Just sold it and got a Canon 300mm F4 and really love it. You will loose auto focus with a 1.4 converter.

Buying a canon lens would not help as he is a nikon user (gaffa tape ?) and wether or not he loses auto focus would depend on which nikon body was in use. Even when you are supposed to lose it, as with my old d300s, it may well work, but not reliably. I would have thought that the sort of situation where you are using a 500mm lens (effectively a 750mm) with a 1.4 converter would not be one where auto focus would be of any interest.

If you want to get the very best performance from a lens you should shoot it between f5.6 and f8.0. As you open up or close down from this 'optical sweet spot' you will see a degradation in IQ. In fact, with less expensive lenses you will see a much more pronounced degradation occurring much quicker than you might with a top-of-the-line Canon or Nikon lens. If I were not in a position to spend the big bucks for such a beast, I would do everything in my power to adjust my compositional approach such that keeping my f-stop between 5.6 and 8.0 would still give me a satisfactory result. With longer lenses this usually means selecting a primary plane of sharpness that will be completely sharp and if necessary letting the foreground/background become a little less sharp. This will insure that at least the primary element in your photos will be rendered with pretty good detail regardless of the lens you are using.

Seems like the Sigma haters are out in force. Of course the Nikon and Canon's will give better results than the Sigma, but not really that much better. Using the right f stops really helps this lens. The 1.4 converter works on my Sigma when used on my D-90 and D-700 but it is not a Nikon converter.
