I'm actually not working on goals, but on a new project. It's called "The World as Seen Through My Windshield." Pretty interesting so far. I think it will be pretty popular with my students. I'd include an early example, but have learned that it's prohibited. Plus, it's turning out to be pretty technique-intensive. I've got exposure pretty well conquered (most are night photographs), but I'm still working to get sharpness from a moving car to a point that won't offend the members here. (The kids like it already.)
Since I'm dependent on my driver, there can sometimes be several days between outings.

Photography is full of self-taught practitioners. I have been in two classes (well...a workshop and a class) with a published photographer who also represents one of the "big three." He openly admits to being self-taught. I like his classes, and I like him. But I've learned to weigh what he says. Especially when he discusses complex processes. Because sometimes he becomes more procedural than logical. And...he admits that there is usually more than one way to do a thing, but he only teaches one way.
The same thing was true in the two photography classes I took many years ago. Most of the big ideas were taught spot-on correct. But some of the details were absolutely wrong. Usually because the instructor didn't understand the underlying mathematics.
No glass filter is going to reliably protect a lens from catastrophic damage. But it will protect from careless scratches or spills.
I fell with my camera a year and a half ago. Landed on the hood and pushed it back over the barrel of the lens. The filter ended up with some grass stuck to it. There was no damage to the lens or the camera. DO NOT TRY TO TELL ME that filters and hoods are useless for protection. (And yes...the lens cap was off because I was actually taking pictures.)

I don't use a CPL very often, but I do like to have a clear protective filter ahead of my front lens element. I do not see any benefit in using a second filter when using a CPL.

After observing a quite embarrassing exchange with a brand new member who dared to pist some photographs in an introductory post here yesterday, I went on a search to find the actual posted written rules forbidding photographs in this forum. I looked in all obvious spots for a specific ruling. I intentionally omitted looking anywhere that required any level of mind reading or ExtraSensory Perception. I found nothing. Nada. Zilch.
In fact, in the rules for this section, the very first specific instruction I found covered not only "How to post a picture," but also how to "Store Original," in order to post it with higher resolution.
My intent here is not to pick a fight. I'm sure this post is well along a path of being moved. But if this forum is to survive, it is time to start focusing on what matters. Photograps are generally not evil on a photography forum.

My experience has been the same. The one single exception has been a Meike grip that came with a used D500 which I bought in October. It seems so far to work as it should.
I'm having to learn to be happy with third party EN-EL3e batteries in my D90 IR camera. Those seem to have been discontinued by Nikon.

That is a very reasonable guideline, and it is the rule we followed for appliances years ago when I workrd in a repair shop. I repaired Lionel and American Flyer trains. American Flyer had been put of business for several years, and we got lots of vontage and classic Lionel for repair. Much of it was not replaceable. Some of it was not easily replaceable. Some of it was in really desperate condition. In those cases, the owner had to make a decision that might or might not seem rational to anyone else.

Hi Bob. I can't help you with the book, but can validate your question. I just attended a two-day live training class a couple of weeks ago. The latest update is very substantial...lots of changes.
Also make sure that whatever you pursue matches your version...Mac or PC. There are some significant differences in what the user interface presents to the user. Once you get past those, everything is pretty much the same. But some of us PC users were getting frustrated because we couldn't access things the way the instructor was trying to show us with his Mac.

I have never had a "foreign" battery damage a camera, but I have had a ProMaster that just never quite worked right. It won't quite charge completely, and it won't reset the 'shot counter.' On the other hand, last time I needed a EN-EL3e battery, no Nikon-labelled batteries were available anywhere. Finally ordered a Wasabi from B&H to keep my IR-converted D90 going. It seems to be working OK.
I've had mixed results with battery grips. I have a Meike that came with a D500 bought recently which seems to work perfectly and completely. But a few years ago, two different grips for the D300 that came in a box of stuff were complete failures. One caused the camera to completely lock up, the other heated up and immediately drained the battery.

Many here, including me, do not receive the daily email or use the digest. My understanding is that, as a 'digest,' it includes a sampling, but not all, of the full content. There are a number of other recent discussions of traffic and participation, but I seriously doubt that those are ever included in the digest.
There have also been discussions around the loss of members from the aged population here and other reasons why the folks who operate the forum are needing to reshape it in order to ensure that it is able to continue.

Maybe my situation was unique. I grew up in a little town 300 miles from anywhere. A local pharmacist had an arrangement with Kodak in Dallas, and used the bus to get film to them and processed Kodachrome transparency slides back. Time was three days, and cost was very reasonable. Both black & white and Ektachrome took a week of more and were much more expensive.
So for us (and many others in town) Kodachrome was the norm. Anything else required special consideration (and justification).
