Just upgraded to a Nikon Z8. I thought I would be all set with 4 or 5 batteries, but batteries for my D700 give me an error. Does anyone have a recommendation for an aftermarket version that works well? I’m also looking for a vertical grip, the Nikon version is a bit much, anyone have a recommendation? Amazon has one from Bitubol, but there’s zero reviews.

I have some EN-EL15As or 15Bs if anyone is interested. I think the Z8 requires EN-EL15C.

Wasabi Power tends to keep up with latest requirements. Usually they sell both older versions and the latest at different prices.

Interesting, I've been using Nikon EN-EL15Bs (Nikon originals that came with my Z6) in my Z8 with no concerns.

Compare your FW version to OP ? If yours is older, maybe that warns you not to update ?

I always get confused when I see posts like this. The grip is an integral part of the Z8. You have already spent $3700 plus tax on a new Z8 but it seems you are willing to forego Nikon's high quality $346 grip for someone else's plastic version to save around $250 rather then getting the real thing. If you are broke and have no choice then maybe it makes sense.

my recollection is that the earliest version of the en-el15 does not work on the Z-8. look on the back of the battery. about 10 years or so ago they came out with a version labelled Li-Ion 20. At the time no one understood what difference that made. now it turns out that if it is older than that it won't work. newer is fine.

see thom hogan's statement on this at:

rainman -- keep your A & B versions

If you want a long lasting trouble free Battery grip use Nikon most after markets just don't hold up or have full functionality. Been there done that ONCE.

I've been using Nikon EN-EL15A and Bs (Nikon originals) as as well as the battery that came with it, in my Z8 with no errors.

Are you using Nikon original batteries or aftermarket batteries?

What error do those batteries give you? I believe there were some counterfeit Nikon-branded EN-EL15 batteries a few years ago. Might be that you have some of those.

I just bought a set of en-el 15 by a company called Smallrig thru Amazon. About $36 for 2 batt and a USB charger. It has a built in usb- male plug or you can use a usb-c one. They are 2100 amphr and have the chip for Nikon cameras. My D850 would not take other 3rd parties. So far so good.

OK, you paid $4,000 for a Z8 but you want to cheap out on batteries and a vertical grip. Scratching my head.

The Z8 wii use your 15A and 15B batteries, they just won't last as long as a 15C. I just bought to BM 15C batteries from Walmart through Amazon for $36 or $37, and they work just fine. Energon batteries also work fine in my Z8. I have some LPs that won't, but I can use them on my D7500.

I couldn't agree more. I have an R5 Canon. If I'm going to get a top of the line camera I'm NOT going to get some cheapo grip. What's next for you? Plastic lenses??
