I shot this early this morning using a 6” Newtonian and a Canon T2i mounted with a T ring. I am still trying to get my scope alignment correct as evidenced by my defraction spikes on the stars.
This is a single image shot at ISO 800 and 20 second exposure.
I’m pretty happy for my second effort this year.

Amazing how small it is compared to the sun. I've only got Venus transiting. I'll try this year pending weather also.

It’s really a shame that the sun is so quiet right now. No sunspots and not very much surface activity. At least when Venus made its last transit there were sunspots to aid with focus and exposure.
This was one of many shots that I took that day.

Just a reminder that mercury will transit the sun on Monday. I was able to capture some images in 2016 but had to travel 90 miles to get away from clouds. In exchange I was blessed with 35 mph winds making it difficult to get stable images.
Here are a couple of the shots I did with my Lunt solar telescope and Canon 7d camera. This year I am going to try using the Tamron 150-600mm and the Canon 7d Mark ii. Hoping for clear skies.

Yep. Like always, Fall, Santa Ana winds, and raging brush fires.
We plan to go check on our RV up in storage at the kid's yard. The Tick Fire caused evacuation in the area, but no word of the fire getting there.
But Ca-Ca occurs....

It almost showed the promise of clouds and moisture here yesterday evening. But it was all gone by Pee-30 (Bedtime for me and my dog).
Being a Sunshine Superman, if there's clouds at sunset I say Fugitaboutit. I've tried setting up with broken clouds, and they come to take a look at what I'm doin out there in the dark.

Any word from Craig? I keep seeing Santa Clarita being mentioned and wondered if either of you are in the bad areas.

At a rough price of $2.36 per gallon = $38,940.00

Now I don't know what the vendor profits are, but those seem like significant numbers.

30 X 2.36 = $70.80 per tank full.

But.... What a RIDE that must be!!!

In 2000 we had 1000 balloons participating so almost double the fuel. So glad they brought the number of balloons down. My first couple of Fiestas we had 750 balloons launching. Landing has become pretty small in town as the holes fill up with new construction.

I bet the Propane guy is a happy camper.

We make a small but significant contribution to their pockets year round but this event is the black Christmas week for the vender that lands the contract.
Figure 30 gallons of propane for most balloons as a minimum times 550 balloons twice a day for most days over 9 days and that’s a lot of gas. Ride balloons carry more propane and smaller balloons may carry less.

Sonny , you know just how to say it . I got a chuckle out of the hot air comment.

One of only a few photos I have of me doing an inflation during Fiesta.
When I got my motorcycle endorsement, one of the instructors asked why I was getting an endorsement so late in life. I replied that as a balloon pilot we get excited when we go over 10 or 15 mph. I thought he was going to die laughing.

That’s so cool Jim, I don’t think I’ve seen that one before.

Wouldn’t you love to do that? Just what you need, another expensive time consuming hobby 😂🤣😂🤣

Lol. I’m a balloon pilot already. This is the second year I am not flying and yes it gets expensive.
I have over 250 hours.

Jim , that is soooo" Awesome " I love it . What tripod did you use to capture this ? I wish I could image something like that "there's an awful lot of balloons in that TL , I made Elvis out and it's pretty cool I like the colorful ones the best.

Thank you for the compliment.
I just used a standard Manfroto tripod and a remote timer.

Here is a link to one that I did 7 years ago.
This is my teaser that really shows the different directions of wind at different layers in the Albuquerque box.

You had more this morning than we were able to launch for today’s mass ascension. We had almost an inch of rain yesterday setting fog along the river.
As a result I did not get my time lapse video. Maybe later in the week.
Here is a shot from the top of the mountain that I drove to.
The first shot is after the fog tried to lift but rolled back over the field.
The second shot was the few balloons that launched before the field was closed.

Don't melt your wings, Icarus.

Going up in a plane, or a balloon?
